Easy-Off works great with no effort, made mine look brand new. As far as seasoning a WSM, other than the grates its got a porcelain coating

There are small but subtle differences between the Gen1 & Gen2 22" WSM's. Like the leg footprint (Gen2 is wider diameter) Charcoal grate height, arched & rectangular center door openings. I've definitely cleaned my share of craigslist kettles and WSM's and gone down to porcelain on my keepers.
I'm not a big fan of oven cleaner, but I do prefer Gunk or Simple Green, a 3M pad(s) and elbow grease, but whatever gets the job done works.

For cleaning grates I cut the bottom of a plastic 55 gallon drum @ 16" tall and can soak all my round grills easily. For stainless steel parts like the Rib-O-Lator or EZ-Que rotisserie cradles, I picked up a well used 6" deep hotel pan at Seattle Restaurant Store for $8 and use Oxi-Clean powdered bleach, soak'em then hose'em!
