I heard this last weekend in Renton, WA, from an MMA employee, that Kingsford has decided NOT to renew their commitment to the challenge...

That is correct. No Kingsford $40K Challenge in 2013. This year Kingsford will be hosting a vote on Grilling.com for the public to choose a selection of KCBS events and all competitors at the event will receive free bags of Kingsford Charcoal.
