The only reason I ask is because there is a spice packet on the inside of the cryovac meat pack.

I wanted to do cheater pastrami and smoke a corned beef. I've done the Corning myself before but don't want to deal with that again.

Anyone bought a Costco corned beef? Is it already "corned"? If so what is the pack of spices for on the inside?!

Thanks,

John

Ummm... It's called CORNED beef :-D

Yes, it is corned. I put the contents of the packet into a tea ball and toss it into the crock pot with the corned beef if I'm cooking it that way. For pastrami you could grind it and include it in your rub or just toss it.

BTW, if you haven't researched this yet I recommend Thirdeye's site...

I always soak store bought corned beef in fresh water for at least 24 hours, changing the water two or three times, to leach out some of the salt.

Ok, here's an even dumber question...

What's the difference between the store labeled "corned beef" and regular beef brisket?

They're both briskets, right?

Always wanted to know, never had a chance to ask.

Corned beef, brisket or not, has been corned, or brined in a solution that typically includes a cure while regular brisket is just good old beef.

And to add to Ron's answer. You smoke brisket, you get smoked brisket. You smoke corned beef, you get pastrami although some argue it is faux pastrami since it isn't made from scratch.

corned MEANS salted, spice pac adds flavor ,if you don't like the spices toss it or use half,, i like to cook my corned beef in a pressure cooker then brown it on the grill

I meant toss the spice pack if you're making pastrami. If I'm simmering it I use it. You frequently see corned beef rounds, but they're too lean. It's brisket or nothing for me.

Thanks guys!

I figured it was but you never know... I could see a company selling "corned beef" and expecting you to corn it with that spice pack!

Great news! I will pick up some and make some bitchin' pastrami.

Rye bread, mustard and pickles! Oh yes!

... And I love hash tags! Gotta bring them into everyday life! #justkidding #OrAmI?
