We need more KCBS Reps up here...

I have heard from a few event organizers that they would like to have their events sanctioned by KCBS but it is too expensive to bring the reps in from out of state. So...we need more reps up here in order to grow the KCBS community. From what I understand...this is the procedure for becoming one...please let me know if this is still the preferred way and hopefully a contact at KCBS to get the ball rolling...

"A candidate must train under qualified reps at a minimum of four sanctioned contests before earning his or her "wings". Under the
reps' supervision, a trainee is expected to satisfactorily perform all of the tasks both those behind-the-scenes and those in the public eye – a rep would normally do during the course of a contest. After each contest, the
candidate's performance and knowledge of the rules are critiqued by the supervising reps. Ideally, a candidate will train under as many reps as possible in order to be exposed to a wider variety of reps' ways of managing a contest. "Reps in training" do not have expenses covered by the organizer."

My follow up question is "Can a prospective Rep train AND compete in the same comp"?

No.

Repping and competing are mutually exclusive. I would hope that is obvious?

First you have to get a current rep to recommend you. No you cannot not train to be a rep or be a rep at a contest you are cooking.

Then You must meet the following requirements:
REP PREREQUISITES:
1. Attend KCBS CBJ Class and become certified barbecue judge. Supply Date: _______

2. Establish 3 years tenure with KCBS sanctioned contests. Member since when? _____

3. Participate in a minimum of 5 sanctioned contests three consecutive years (minimum of 15 total contests) yes no (circle one) Approximate number: _________

4. Judge a minimum of 10 contests in three year tenure. Approximate number of contests in last 3 years: ___________

5. Table captain a minimum of 2 times during the three years: Name at least two contests where candidate served as a Table Captain: _____________________________

We have a void in reps here as well. Have to bring them in from MN, IA, AR, OK and we supposedly live in a BBQ hot bed...

A current rep has to recommend someone to take work away from them..Are you serious?? That seems quite inappropriate.

That is still part of the good ole boy network of KCBS.

This is a map of current KCBS Rep locations...

http://goo.gl/maps/LVVJ4

1) The organize can choose whom they want on the sanctioning application
2) Most organizers stay with whom they used in previous years
3) If specific Reps are not choozen by the organizer, the KCBS office assigns Reps based on closeness to the event and availability
4) The closer to the event date an application is received in the office, the lesser chance of a close Rep being assigned

We needs Reps spread around the country...

I don't disagree but the reps are the ones that see the judges and teams that are most involved with KCBS comps. I know there are some areas we are actively seeking reps but I'm not on the rep committee and couldn't tell you where exactly those areas are.

You should do it JD! You'd be great at it!

They do see the judges and cooks and usually know what is happening at every comp but that is a poor rule that needs to be changed. Nobody wants to recommend their replacement.

I just think it absurd that some of these events have to spend money to fly reps in when they can barely get money for a prize pool.

If KCBS wants to expand they need to consider how their rules effect these areas.

Don't get me started on why they are allowing two events on the same day in MI where we have to fight just to get enough teams to meet the minimums at almost all events.
