mini-WSM nipple size?

So the one problem I would like to solve with my Mini-WSM is the bottom vent. what i'm going to do is try and create airflow similar to the UDS builds. So i'm going to put 3 nipples with caps, and one ball valve on it. I think i might run to home depot to get the nipples/caps on my lunch break.
Should I use 1" diameter nipples? I think i have extra ball valves in my garage somewhere so i'm just going to try and use them.
Hoping for a stable temp from about 225-325. So I can do at least ribs and chicken on it.
any opinions would be great.
Thanks

Joe

If you are refering to the Smoky Joe vent, lots of people take a small stainless pet food bowl and drill holes around the bottom side. place the bowl upside down to cover the vent. Stops the ash and allows for air flow.

Smokey Joe Gold grills work better for mini-WSM applications. The vents are on the sides. Mine holds a very stable 250 for well over an hour. If I need more time, I can add some lit coals as the temperature drops.

You could simulate the SJG by putting your vents on two sides near the top, I suppose. Then just keep the bottom vent closed.

I think you might be making it more complicated. Below is a link to a thread I posted that shows the minimal air opening needed for mine to run for 3.5 hours on a little bit of used charcoal. I guess the question here is what issues are you having now with the current setup that is pushing you to need to make modifications?

I used three 3/4" nipples and a ball valve on mine and it's more than enough air for any application. I can burn 10-12 hours on one fill with a charcoal basket.

I think his problem is that the intake vent on a SJS is at the very bottom, so it can clog up with ash as you cook.

Your using a SJG, like I use, so the vents are on the sides, so they don't clog.

10 to 12 hours on a mini-WSM?

I have the silver, and the ash covers the bottom vent, within 4 hours or so. The bottom vent is the only one, so I was going to drill some holes in the sides for airflow. This should fix that issue and let it run until I run low on lit coals. I would like to do ribs and not have to touch it.

Have you tried "protecting" the vent like in the thread below? If you don't want to take this route, I would start out with only one nipple to save from possibly unnecessary drilling.

Oh, you're right CD I meant to say mine is a mini UDS, but I am using the SJ bottom with the nipple and valve arrangement that eppo is looking for. It works very well.

I have 4 different Smokey Joes. I have tried different setups with my Mini Cajun Bandit and the one that seems to have the best control for Low n' slow cooking is the one that has 3 intake vents like my Big Drum Smoker clones.

Here is the Mini with the modified SJ handle

Great for all around smo-grilling and Reverse Searing

Here is the Smokey Joe Gold with the side vents

The jury was still out on this, temps for me were not really an issue, but others seem to prefer it over the SJS venting.

So, I took what I felt was the best of both worlds and took an SJS, plugged the bottom vent holes and drilled 3 1" intake vents the same area as the SJG and regulate the draft with magnets.

Go ahead and drop the $$ on nipples and ball valves, then start looking for another Smokey Joe. just sayin'!

Homer Joe approves!

I still have not felt the need to use the vintage 3 daisy vent SJ, but it would be the one most similar to a 14" WSM.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/IMG_3990.jpg

But just like the SJS vents ash accumulation could be a problem on long cooks if unattended.

If a Mini BDS/UDS is what you are shooting for?

I stick by the proven Big Drum Smoker design and have never felt the need to ball valve one out-your mileage may vary.

eppo,

Here's a link to my mini UDS that has a Smokey Joe base with a ball valve and nipples.
