"S" fire basket...

Does anyone have more info and pics on this? Can you make this without welding? how does the fire follow the "s"? soes the inner walls need to be solid?

Now that I have a larger pit with a 24 x 24 firebox I have been thinking of building one of these myself. Anyone want to chime in with some experience with using one of these on a large offset?

Very Interesting, if I understand correctly...

For example, you put in a layer of unlit charcoal and wood chunks, then light it at one end (either with a torch or a basket of lit coals) and as it burns the fire will spread, winding around slowly through all the unlit charcoal. I guess this is the same basic concept as the Minion Method?

In the Minoin method, the unlit coals are on bottom though, so the vapors from the freshly lit coals travel through a layer of burning coals and get burned off. In this method, the freshly lit coals are beside the burning coals, so this doesn't happen.

Does this have any effect?

The old unlit coals controversy Opening up a can of worms with this question.

Good morning Norco.

So, the dual divder walls slows the burn down? would 1 wall work? I'm still having a hard time understanding how the burn "winds" around the basket...

no, 1 wall would not work, or rather, not work as well.

1 wall, and the heat transfer will light the next row. Instead of following an S pattern, it will ignite left to right or right to left and get the whole basket going, defeating the purpose.

I see UDS and Cabinet smoker. Your thinking might be vertical.

Put the charcoal box in a offset firebox in your mind. Air is coming in from one direction, passing through the box, then into the smoke chamber.

So if you light one end (down draft) the charcoal will light backwards (up draft) slowly following whatever shape you set the charcoal up in (In this charcoal basket, it follows an "S". On a full Bandera grate, I have even used a large "U" instead of the straight minion dump of some lit on a pile of unlit.)

Does this help? I look at my verticals like the WSM, and the basket is useless, but in an offset, its nice. I got one I rarely use, but its a Big Al original that is a prized possession (look in the picture gallery under modifications) This is a try chambered basket, and not an "S" basket.

Really needs dual walls on the dividers to avoid heat transfer to unlit fuel. I use a basket made for me by Bentley, welded with plate, using expanded for the bottom to allow ash drop and ventilation. I have a large offet with a large round firebox - Size of the basket is 18" wide x 11" tall by 26" long, and allows me about 5 hours + burn time per load at about 225* at the grate. Use lump charcoal with wood chip and chunk. Predictable burn time and results, and so much easier than constant tending.
