Congrat to Pellet Envy and all the competitors for a job well done.

Was there today and I think about 80% of the teams had "The Good One" smokers.

Jeff_in_KC 05-07-2006 10:14 AM

That's probably not too surprising given the area. They are pretty good smokers. I just never liked the layout of 'em for some reason.

So how was the contest, Todd? Who did you meet?

kcpellethead 05-07-2006 12:22 PM

Thnx Jeff. 80% Good One is a little exaggerated, but there certainly are many of those pits there. This is the first year that Ron Goodwin didn't have his own booth. Instead, Outdoor Creations had the set-up displaying Good One cookers.

Considering we made the decision to switch from pellets to sticks about 1:00PM Friday after a series of unfortunate events, this was an absolute total shock to us. It was great fun.

WHOA! Pellet Envy used sticks to win??? What were the unfortunate events that led to that decision?

Solidkick 05-07-2006 01:50 PM

Ut-Oh.......sounds like someone's figured out the Geer pit as well......I'll take hand me downs anytime....

Congrats on the win! Hope to see you again this summer somewhere out on the road........

chad 05-07-2006 03:04 PM

Congrats, Rod!!

Just shows, again, that it's the cook and not the cooker!!

scottyd 05-07-2006 06:56 PM

Congrats, Rod Stick burner and all great job. I know I will see you somewhere this summer.

kcpellethead 05-07-2006 09:48 PM

Thnx everyone.

Jeff, to answer your question, about 7:00 AM Friday I checked the weather for Topeka. When I read it to my wife Sheri and she said "wow, that'd be great weather to cook on the other pit." I said, "oh no, Topeka has always liked our food and the trailer is already packed and ready to go." Sheri has bad allergies anyway, so I totally blew off her comments as just being funny. Anyway, running a couple last minute errands made us really late. We pull into the lot where we store our trailer and as we turn the corner, first thing I see is that one of the tires on the trailer is flat. So Sheri says again, "I think we're supposed to take the Geer pit today." I decide to just change the flat because we have a spare mounted right on the trailer. We go to put the spare on and the trailer manufacturer had included the wrong size wheel. At that point we unload what we need, went back to the house, pack the Geer pit and hook on. We didn't get to the contest until about 4:00 PM. So . .. . .it was a different day. Kyle Laval of Tom & Josh's Orgasmic Slabs told us as soon as he saw us pull in that this all meant it would be our weekend . . . too funny . . ..

On a different note, I got to see what looked to be an older Spicewine pit. Getting there late and having to sit with the pit a little more than usual (smiley thing here), I didn't get to chat much with the team. It was a big one though.

Rod, geez...you've got to be the only guy I know that would make excuses for taking a Geer to a competition!!

Congrats again...

BrooklynQ 05-08-2006 06:41 AM

Congrats Rod.

Jeff_in_KC 05-08-2006 08:03 AM

Great story of overcoming the obstacles, Rod! Arrived at 4pm, huh? Maybe I ought to re-think taking vacation days for every contest... apparently it's possible be done without it! Of course I'm not in your league so maybe not this year!

So Kyle makes good rubs AND he's a prophet?

Too bad all that happened to you and Sheri but man, you all had it going on this weekend! Good job!

MoKanMeathead 05-08-2006 08:08 AM

Congrats Rod!! What is that like two cooks with the Greer and two GC's?

Way to GO!
