Why do we moderate the way we do.

Folks, I am pulling this from a previous post I put up so it is not interpreted to be targeting any one individual. It is not. It is some general thought in response to some recent events and comments made to me in several ways. Personally, PM, phone calls etc. Many have heard it from me first hand, others may have learned the hard way.

Why do we moderate the way we do.??

Our guidelines have some very specific requirements.??? Heres a snip from our rules documents which can be found in the welcome section.

Any post with no redeeming quality or deemed negative by moderators will be deleted. In other words, you are NOT allowed to be a jerk just to chit stir or piss people off. Moderators do not have time to be putting out flame wars.

NO nudity, porn or seductive pictures. of any type, anywhere in any forum. NONE. There is zero tolerance for this. It will be deleted immediately and don’t even think of complaining.

NO lewd, vulgar or off color language. Minor profanity (Damn It!) is okay.

So, the question was presented, why do moderate so fast? For example, we take down suggestive photos very quickly.. and other times, people have asked or commented/complimented us on how we remain so civil and respectful of one another.

We are not thin skinned prudes here. The deal is, we never want any of you to be embarrassed by what pops up on your screen when surrounded by family(or at work with co workers present). (I am not saying anyone has in a long time). Why should there be a need to explain to your wife or daughter the nude photo on the BBQ SITE?. We WANT you to be able to leave our site open in the kitchen or family room to make it easy to check in.

On the same token, we do not want any of you to be injected into the middle of a flame war among members, or subject to hurtful or insulting rhetoric regarding controversial or personal issues. We want to keep this as a safe haven and family friendly where you are confident that you can come to relax with friends without being surrounded by bad karma or embarrassing content.

In the case of flaming or bad karma, it is not the moderators, but you folks who do it for the most part on your own. Its rare a moderator has had to jump into a flame war beginning. I thank you all for that.

From the success of this board and thru comments both publicly and thru PM I believe 99.999% of our members are happy with our culture and its guidelines. As I have said before, unfortunately, we cannot make everyone happy. There are some that do not like us, our culture and especially our moderators, but we don't force anyone to log in here. We will however take action when someone repeatedly breaks the rules or continually crosses the line. Depending on the infraction, they will loose privileges, access to some forums, PM's, Email, etc. However, I think with the help of the general membership, we are pretty successful in making this forum what it set out to be.

Again, this is not targeting any specific individuals, just answering a few questions and leaving it here for reference.

On Edit.. heres another rant from long ago.

Poobah! You don't have to defend success!

mm_0_mm 12-15-2007 05:45 PM

yep, I was around back in the yahoo days, don't get to hang out here as much as I would like, so the "road to farkerdom" has been a kinda strung out.

cardiac_cadet002 12-15-2007 06:21 PM

I consider myself still a newbie, but from what I have seen you have done a wonderful job. I love coming here and now spend most of my time here. Keep up the great work to you and all the moderators.

No group of people will be completely happy - it just doesn't happen - but this little chunk of cyberspace comes very, VERY close.

My hat's off to those who shaped it way back when.

chinesebob 12-15-2007 07:58 PM

My main computer is hooked up to our TV in our family room and to say that my kids see everything I look at is an understatement. It's great to have this place. Even if I don't have anything to say I enjoy reading everyday.

Yakfishingfool 12-15-2007 11:17 PM

Phil, no reason to defend your position but it is good to reiterate it at times. I go to a couple of forums regularly. These forums are run pretty much the same as here. It shouldn't be embarassing or inappropriate for your kids or wife to read what's here. i much prefer the slighty more conformist request as here, than the ones where anything goes. If we all agree to it, and stick by it and help to police ourselves and each other then we are working together as a community to make it someplace we feel comfortable to be in. I may have stepped over once or twice, maybe even three times but understand fully when or why it happened and felt bad afterwards it needed to be addressed. This is Phils place, and Phils rules are the law, but I, for one, can see that there are a lot of other guys that not only agree with it but help to maintain it. good job to all of you!!!!

Bob, you're now officially the poster-child for moderation!

Folks, before you post something 'questionable' think of chinesebob who's family room TV is showing your post on it. 'Nuff said?

StLouQue 12-16-2007 10:34 AM

There are many viewpoints on this forum (and in life) that I vehemently disagree with. I frequently read posts that leave my eyes either rolling, or bugging out. This, I believe, is the result of being part of a minority. And that's okay, we don't have to agree on everything. Where I do feel kinship with the majority is the Brethren tendency to listen to our own inner moderators.

Before responding to a post that offends me, I typically consider:
Will my opinions, philosophies, beliefs cause anyone to think outside of their comfort zone? Perhaps...on occasion.
Will my words enrage someone's sensibilities? Without question.
Is it worth it? Usually not.

There is a Buddhist precept that I embrace, "Do not speak, unless it improves on silence." If I can hold my tongue, surely you can too (your own tongue though...ok?).

And finally, if it is nudity that you desire...surf elsewhere. This isn't the place for it.

I thought all you farkers had wings.

I'm new to this forum, but, from what I've seen so far, this is, by far, one of the best out there. I've learned more, and laughed more, than I have with any others. Keep up the good work!

Low carb - If there was any more sugar in this post I'd be in a coma. Can't we at least pick one group of people to be mean to; maybe rib-boilers, how about that. I'd pick on mayo or the improper use of foil, but too many people here have developed bad habits and I don't want to single them out for the public ridicule and scorn that they deserve.

I agree, let's pick on the rib-boilers!!!

Phil, don't worry about the moderation, I think we all know when we cross the line (and some times we even pull back before it's to late)

very true. I love how everyone is positive here. Good job on the forum

backporchbbq 12-08-2008 06:35 PM

I think this is the most active respectable forum out there. I have learned a lot and know I have more to learn. For the most part it is good natured, and when not it is taken care of. I am proud to be part of this site, and hope to be here for a long time to come.

Arlin_MacRae 12-09-2008 08:46 AM

Thanks, guys!

MikeR 10-06-2009 02:21 PM

All I can say is keep up the good work!

SmokinPaPa 11-09-2009 05:30 PM

Keep up the good work. This should be a family oriented site. Thanks for all the good information and commrodery (sp) here.

Divemaster 02-25-2010 11:39 AM

First off, I want to say thank you to not only you for creating this site, but also to ALL of the moderators. I know that the job isn’t easy,

Lord knows that I’ve received more than a few of the ominous PM’s asking “Did you really want to say that” or “Do me a favor and read your post again.” and sometimes (ok, most times. Ok, just about all the time) you guys are right.

I’ve been on boards where the name of the game is how big a flame do you carry into the war. I’ve found that these sites quite simply, and thankfully, just don’t last. This site is different. While I’m not trying to diminish the work of the Moderators, I do know that there is a fair amount of self moderation that takes place. Member ‘A’ posts something that has the potential of upsetting others and Member ‘B’ drops him/her a PM asking if that’s the way they really wanted to have the post taken. I’m willing to bet that 9 times out of 10 the post is edited to clarify the point. To be honest, I think most of us really try to keep it above board and self moderate. Yes there have been times where a post has sparked a flame, but I willing to bet not many posts further down is someone stating that “This kind of post is not the way we do things here.” I don’t know if we secretly want to be moderators or simply just don’t put up with it in what we consider ‘Our House’.

Phil, you and the Moderators have created a very special place here. In reading back to The Inception of The Brethren 10:45 PM 3/5/03, it looks that was at least part of the reason for it being created. I also know that it’s only through your hard work and consideration for others that it is going to last for a long time. I only hope that we can keep up the tradition and standards that you all have set.

Thank you again.

barbefunkoramaque 02-25-2010 12:49 PM

I would like to thank the poster mod guy who posted that thing about new members. Had a point I made a while back where I thought the word "freshmen" or even "Sophomore" memeber (which more precisely defines what a new member is of about any body, instead of the derogatory "Newbie," "Newby," "Noob," "Nubie," "Noobe," "Noobie," or anything like that. In fact, I now think the words could be put into the word sensor thingy to make an excellent point. One is, who actually knows whether a new member is new at BBQ and second... what if we end up turning off a new member who would have shared the Moinkball, or ABT, or Fattie, or Bacon Explosion. You never know where your next great thing is gonna come from.

Well, other than officially making Mindy Vegas or Sasha Blonde the official mascot of the BBQ Brethren I am out.

GWA 02-25-2010 01:22 PM

I like it here. I was a lurker on another board for about 2 years and didn't like the way the "powers" took a blind eye in letting some members get picked on. And occasionally I saw THEM do the picking-on also. That's not the way it should be and it certainly wasn't for me. I won't go back there if you paid me.
