Input please on a Virginia Competition.

Hello guy and gals, a few questions for you. My local area in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is looking to have a KCBS BBQ Competition. If it works out they will get it certified as a state championship. My question is for those who would be interested in competing in a contest in Lexington, Virginia what would be a date/weekend you would be most interested in. Lexington is one hour north of Roanoke on I-81 and about an hour west of Charlottesville. It would be at the Virginia Horse Center and would shoot for a 30 team competition the first year. The date being discussed now is June 4th-5th, what do you think? All input would be help full.

Thanks

Ruben

I'd be interested but Upper Marlboro, MD is early June & right around the corner from us. Lexinton is about 3 hours. There are also rumors of another Virginia contest or 2 but no dates set. If Virginia Beach comes through next year that could mean 5 or 6 in VA next year.

I can't remember much going on in August so that might be a better month but it can be damn hot.

Having said that, I think if they do their homework & build a cooker friendly event teams will come.

That's the same weekend that we are setting up The Virginia BBQ comp / warrior picnic in Springfield. 4 meat event followed by a wounded warrior picnic / troop feed.

I hear you Tom. Staunton, Virginia is looking at one also, they are looking to do a mid August competition

I'd love to be in. Just not the same date as another local comp and I'll be there. I'm a JMU grad and my parents live in Harrisonburg, so that area works for me :)

All about contests within an easy drive but Upper Marlboro is only an hour. What other options do you have? How about before Salisbury?

HBMTN 11-05-2009 06:52 AM

Before Salisbury could be a good time Mike, I wonder how the cold weather would effect team turn outs though? I was also thinking that there are no close contests the first weekend of November that I know of except for Hog Happnin but it is about 4-5 hours south of here. November and early April would be abut the same weather. Everyone is ready to go early spring and tired by fall so you may be right. Sorry just thinking aloud. :-D

What would be the thoughts on say the 3rd weekend of October? It is peak fall foliage in this area and not a better time to visit the Shenandoah Valley. I know many will say the Royal and Jack and if you can't come for that reason then that is a good thing, but what about for those who are not going to those comps?

That weekend in Oct, is the same as Smoketoberfest in Chambersburg, PA. Another I-81 contest, but I think they may be looking for another date earlier though. I think Dover plans to be around that time also.

I'm open...

January or February would be AWESOME! And I cook under EZ-UPs :-P

HBMTN 11-05-2009 07:33 PM

Wow Dan, January competition with the wind and freezing all night  I thought I had the BBQ bug bad. Jack Daniel's would be a must for that event. Don't get me wrong I'd do it, we just need 28 more insane teams that want to look like this :icon_smil all night!

Dan - 3eyzbbq 11-05-2009 07:46 PM

I bet you I can get 15........

Oh great!

I would look at late September to mid-October. Hedgesville is the first part of September, and Front Royal was first weekend in October.
Another possibility is early May. I would rather go to Lexington than all the way down to Cheseapeake, VA, and I hear Danville is not going to happen next year.

Brett
