Not enhanced turkey wanted

I live near Charlotte, NC, anybody got a lead on whole turkey which is not enhanced, not organic, too expensive, just a plain ole bird.

I plan on brining with, The Fat Man's, brine for two days.

I was in a Publix today and they had fresh, all natural turkeys for a little more than the frozen. The sale by date was after Thanksgiving. Do you have a Publix near you?

Actually, they just opened a store about 45 minutes from me in Fort Mill, SC three weeks a go. The first in the area, i've been there twice. I'll give them a buzz and see what they have, txs!

I was kidding with the link to Dean and DeLuca!!

Publix is usually first rate. They are a FL chain and I grew up going to Publix.

I hear you about getting just a plain old turkey. All the ones that are cheap are just loaded with garbage. Why do they need to do that?

Welll,in my opinion, it's an old devious butchers trick, soak the meat in water, sell by the pound, beats sneaking your thumb on the scale, both devious trickiery but hey, soaking meat in water to increase it's weight is legal. Tipping the scale with your thumb is not. I see hams selling around easter time with, yes, 25% of weigh is enhanced (gotta love that phrase) with water.

Got you on the per pound issue. Around here they give the turkeys away if you but so many dollars in groceries. Give me a good one....

Restaurant Depot carries turkeys that are not enhanced. I just called today and they're holding 3 for me. I think they're $1.25/lb.

I also saw last night at Kroger that Perdue turkey's are also NOT enhanced.

Kroger carries their fresh turkeys here, but they're $1.59/lb.

For what it's worth, they might not be "Enhanced". My friend's family owns a large turkey farm in Bristol Illinois. I asked him about this very thing and he said their birds get nothing additional put into them but the Government makes them have the label that says "May" be enhanced with up to 8% solution.

toddu 11-16-2012 07:38 PM

Harris teeter has them not in solution. And BJs has natural ones on sale right now, $15 off.

Vision 11-16-2012 09:54 PM

You can make a pretty good bird using an enhanced one. Don't stress out about it (not saying that you are).
