Maverick PT-100 vs Thermapen Review/Comparison

I have been wanting to do this one for quite a while now.

Nice video, John. I'm close to pulling the trigger on a thermapen but I'm really considering the maverick. Almost every time I cook tri-tip it's outside at night so the back lit display is HUGE for someone like me. Again, thanks for your work.

What about warranty?I did not watch the whole video.I have 4 Maverick ET 72's.Loved them, great service for the first year, then 2 of them crapped out after the warranty expired.I contacted Maverick via email and phone, all I wanted was to have them repaired, offered to pay whatever charges there would be.NOPE!!! If they are out of warranty, throw them away and buy new ones!IF they are in warranty they will send you a new one but once warranty expires, toss em.Made in China and they cannot even service what they sell!Lost a lotta respect for Maverick,,,,just sayin.:tsk:

I say buy what is good for your budget. $45 less for a one degree difference.

Zorks pork!!!

Nice review JM!

The Thermapen is sexy, for sure, but I can't say I'm personally in a position where a couple degrees or a couple of seconds is so crucial I wouldn't trade them for some convenience and cost factors. Have some thinking to do before I pull the trigger either way.

Thanks, John, always appreciate your thorough and thoughtful vids. :)

exactly. i know i'd be getting a great thermometer with TP(probably the best), but for roughly 40% less with a backlight it's worth CONSIDERING the maverick. The TP has such a good reputation that it's been tough to find an opinion that isnt biased. for the weekend warrior, like myself, a few degrees is no big deal. now, speed is though, when i'm trying to reverse sear my tri-tip to perfection. sorry john, i may have turned your post into a debate

Nice work JM, certainly gives food for thought, thanks for doing that.

It should be an interesting discussion.

Nice video. You should add a waterproof Delta TRAK ( $17.00) to the competition :

A Maverick ET-732 (49.99) and a Delta TRAK (17.00) will set you back less than a Thermapen alone.

I have had my PT-100 for a long time now, since they came out, rock solid performer. I believe the thermocoupler is identical, either way, I have benchmarked it against the Thermapen too, with arguably the same results every time. Benefit to me is I can see it in a dark pit in the middle of the night as well as with polarized sunglasses on.
