Hazelwood- First Comp

Well we did our first comp and we are officially hooked!

It was last weekend at the Kick Off Cook Off in Hazelwood, Mo. and we all had a great time...... Despite the nasty winds Thursday night that ripped off the awing on the RV and demolished our ez-up  Oh and the sidewards rain Friday night oh and the tornado 2 miles south of us after awards......At least Cabela's was next door! Good place to be when the tornado sirens are blairing. Greg did a wonderful job and made our first outing a memorable one. We will definitly be back next year!!

I think for our first time we did pretty good:

I'm really proud of us because we did the pork steak throwdown, the dessert entry and the people's choice pork contest and still managed to turn everything in on time. I guess what surprised me most is we did all of our cooking on 2 wsm's. 4-8lbs pork butts, 3-racks spares, 2-14lbs briskets and 20 chicken thighs. Man talk about juggling. When I signed up for the people choice I thought we would get a 1 5-6 lbs butt instead we got 2-8lbs butts!! Oh and the pork for the people's choice was due at 1100am Saturday.....Man was I shocked. After all it was for charity and it all worked out and made for an exciting time!

Overall placed 24th/58 teams
Chicken 8th
Ribs 18th
Pork 23rd
Brisket 51st
Dessert 17th/27 (i guess people don't like maple, bacon chocolate cake)

SCORES: Appearance/Taste/Tenderness
CK: 899 889 788 788 989 889
RI: 888 888 867 988 989 888
PK: 888 989 988 879 777 977
BR: 866 877 877 878 877 768

Attached are some pictures of the festivities....and Greg yeah that was us leaving at 2pm on Sunday! We had so much fun we hated to leave.

man that is some good lookin 'cue...and placing in the top half in your first comp is quite an accomplisment. congrats

as for criticism, i think the chicken and ribs look a little over-sauced.

what were your scores?

Hey neighbor! Really nice lookin' turn-ins. You deserve every prop you get. Way to go on the call too. Really nice. Hopefully next year won't be quite as "dynamic" weather-wise.

Don't count on it..Greg runs a great contest, but he does a lousy job with the weather...The first year it was like 34 degrees and 45 mph winds at night. I am not sure why he hasn't got that under control yet.

Great job, brisket looks pretty good, who knows maybe a bad table. You boxes look great.

Why do you think i go home every friday evening? I dont have to put up with the weather.
I dressed warm two years ago and last year i missed the wind.
this year the awards were inside this year - so i think i missed all the bad weather. :clap2:

stlgreg 04-29-2010 06:00 PM

and if you keep talking about the weather i will order up snow for next year.
