Mop Sauce Applicators...?

Ok, I live in WI, a state which generally isn't known for BBQ, though there are a few very good places to have it.

I cooked up a pork butt yesterday and had to apply a mop sauce. All I had was a BBQ brush, and that didn't work the best. I looked around at all the local haunts and could not fiind a BBQ mop.

My question is what do you guys use? :?: Any good sources you would recommend? Any "features" or specifics to know before I get one?

Thanks brothers.

Jim

I've got one that I have used for so long, it is probably illegal.
It looks just like a miniature mop; about a foot or so long; kinda like something you would use to wash dishes with. think I got it somewhere like a dollar store in the home-goods area.

Try to find a high temp silicone mop/baster.

I've seen some mops that use little chains

for thicker mops I use a mop I bought at Wal*Mart in the grilling section, for thinner mops you cant go wrong with a dedicated spray bottle.

Just make sure you put the thinner mops for a spray bottle through a coffee filter or something to get out larger particulates.

All my mops are thin (AJ and Jack for example) and go through a sprayer without a problem. For them I use one of those pressurized spray bottles you can get at HD, Lowes or ACE. Mine is one from ACE. I think it is about a half gallon opaque white bottle with a red handle and black pump. 5-10 pumps and you can spray at will during the entire BBQ.

My uncle uses actual mops (cheap cotton bottoms) for his sauces when mopping pigs. He gets the smallest heads he can and just cuts the handle down.

Some folks swear by using a paint brush.

However, after reading i notice you said you used a brush. Guess i shouldn't post after waking up (night shift mod.)

I don't mop that ofter & use a silicon brush when i do.

This is the type that I use and I found it at one of the old time hardware stores... The kind that still sell mason jars and bear claws.

I also use that but only for liquids with no solids in them. Some of my mops contain whole grain mustard so this would work for them.

Love them.

Others use a regular paint brush that have had about an inch of the brush tips cut off.
Just remember to sanatize the heck out of the brush before and after using it.

Hope this helps.

If I'm cooking a whole mess of food, I'll make a half gallon of mop or more and dunk my meat into it.

If I'm only cooking a couple racks, I'll use a silicone pastry brush. I like the ones by OXO because they have it's designed to trap and hold liquid. Cleanup is easier than regular bristle type brushes. Click photo for linkage.

I mostly use older style shaker bottles. I heat my mop on the stove so all the flavors blend, so having the glass bottle is a bonus. During the cook, I'll only mop with hot liquid, so just remove the metal lid and zap it in the micro to warm it up. For more volume I use a stainless steel backpacking cup with folding handles. I just set it in the pit for 5 to 10 minutes before mopping to heat it.

For glazes I go with a sillycone basting brush and use the stainless cup to heat it.
