Did you pick a winner?

I recently judged a contest and several people have asked me if I "picked the winner". I, of course, told them that this wasn't how it really worked and that each box was judged based on a set of individual guidelines but the question is interesting. In the end, do we ever really know if we tasted the best of the best? Based on scores (and the subjective nature of many of the judges' tastes) the top 10 are usually really close and should all be top-tier. I tasted over 50 briskets and the top would have been tough to differentiate if I even tasted on of the winners, I'll never know.

MBN finals judge; you'll know. :-) Same for GBA too.

I had a perfect 180 rib one time. I was the table captain and there were more than 6 in the box, so I got to try one. When all the cards were turned in the only number written down for that entry was 9 by all six judges. At awards the team received a 180 pin for their first place ribs.
