Lump Coal Question

It seems more than a few of you here like that Royal Oak Lump Coal over normal Charcoal. I'm thinking about trying it out this weekend. Just have a simple question. Does it burn quicker than normal charcoal, or can I expect the same types of smoking times?

IamMadMan 01-18-2013 02:23 PM

Lump charcoal is almost pure carbon and will burn cleaner and hotter than briquettes will due to the additives in them.

The burning time in you cooker is dependent upon the airflow and the rate of combustion

Yep, it will burn at the same rate, if you control air flow. It will run away from you a little more if you do not control air flow.

Thanks, that makes sense. Air flow seems key to the life. Still learning the details of this stuff. I'm going to grab a couple bags tonight. Thanks guys!

Can't go wrong with RO lump. It's all I use.

So much less ash produced too.

I've tried several lumps over the years and RO is the only one I use now.

I assuming by tfs you mean gordonmfoodmservice, do they sell it all their stores?

SirBBQ 01-18-2013 08:52 PM

Treat yourself to some Wicked Good "Weekend Warrior"... You can order a 22 lb. bag frome ACE online and they will deliver it to your local store. Burns hotter and longer... RO is good but WW is my new favorite.

Trumpstylz 01-18-2013 09:23 PM

You can get it in the green/tan bags at menards. I haven't done a test, but someone on here said that he liked the menard's stuff better than the recent wal mart red bag stuff, not sure if its true.

I just went on a Walmart adventure. Not that Walmart isn't as it is... 3 different stores. Found the last 2 bags at the Commerce Township Walmart. I'd call the ones local to you. Its the only place in this area I know that carries it. I was going to tap the Great Lakes BBQ Assoc people and see where they might get it. I'll post here if its somewhere different.
