I think I understand this app about firebox size and inlet and chimney volume. Found this app that people seem to having good success with http://home.nik-martin.com/smoker/Default.aspx

But is there a "rule of thumb" for firebox volume to cooking chamber volume?

And does the fact I plan to do a reverse flow design make any difference in that ratio?

Thanks.

If you have a tight well insulated smoke then you would need small fire to maintain heat, If it not as good at holding heat you will need a hotter fire to keep the heat. So I would say that there is not true ratio. A Lang is a 250 gal tank and has a 2'x2'x2' fire box (dont quote me on the sizes) but if you want and idea you can do the math.
