WSM keeps on truckin after 30 years!

I used my 30 year old WSM today. It was the 1st time I didn't use the Pitmaster IQ110 to control the temp. It ran perfect without it. The WSM smokers are solid smokers. I doubt if I'll use the IQ110 on it again, that's how steady it ran. The IQ110 is great for the UDS & pork butts & long cooks.

Yep when I first got it my wife said "Think it'll last you the rest of your life?" I said, "I think it'll last the rest of our youngest son's life, I'll probably give it to one of the boys before I reach that point."

Wow, that's great! I used mine for the first time today. Held the temperature like a champ for over 7 hours! Here's to 30 more years!

I just bought a new WSM last week because of this forum! Congrats on 30 years of great food and great memories!

Corky 01-12-2013 08:12 PM

Super! I have had mine for eleven years now and it is still going strong. What a wonderful design they came up with!

HankB 01-12-2013 08:21 PM

Congratulations!

I've had my 18.5 WSM since August of '09 and hope to be using it 30 years from now.

Pappy, have you owned it the whole time? That would blow away my ownership of my 22.5 redhead I got new in 1995.

CD

I think I am the 2nd owner for about 1 year. I got it off of CL for $50. Another Brethren was 1st on the sale and decided that he didn't need another one, so I ended up getting it.

I added some Wheels

Clay Saucer

New door & Lid handle

Can of Easy-Off to give it the new car shine! The legs had a lot of rust (steel legs). I power wire brushed them and sprayed with with clear 500 degree engine paint. New nuts & bolts.

Added some homemade side Weber handles and a grommet for the ET732. New lid Weber thermometer. Handles for the charcoal grate. The charcoal door was steel. I wasn't able to get the right shape to make it air tight, so I bought a aluminum replacement from Weber.

nice mods. i've chosen to keep mine stock though the wheel conversion is appealing.

Captain Dave 01-13-2013 03:49 AM

They are great. Used my original wsm yesterday to cook a couple of butts for the Women's Shelter to be served today. Also used one of the 22s to do some baby backs for us. The wsm is still my favorite. It is one of the originals, wooden handles, shallow water pan, and no date codes. I think it holds temp much better than 22s. Just not quite big enough for long slabs of ribs without cutting or a rack.

It may be my imagination, but I think it is built better than the new ones.

I did use the Auber on it as it was raining with ice and snow all day and I'm a wuss.

I keep my eyes open for another original, but no success so far. Waiting for Harbormaster to let go some of his.

My father in law always cooked on an OLD weber kettle. When Hurricane Katrina came through a big pine destroyed half the house and that ole weber.....crushed legs and big dent in the lid. My mother in law as all southern women do wanted it gone because "it didn't look right".......well I put some short 3/4 inch pipe nipples to replace the legs, put it on a rolling cart and left the dent in the head. I gave her a nickname and she is cooking to this day,,,,the name of course is "FYK"....which of course stands for **** you Katrina......

morgaj1 01-13-2013 01:05 PM
