Smokin at Pork Loin -38⁰F on myUDS with Heavy Pron

We'll my Dad was in town and he's never seen a UDS, to boot Dan the charcoal man dropped my order off. So figured what the heck its only -38⁰F out fire the Drum up I can smoke this :) Emptied the KF blue out of the charcoal basket loaded it up with the new WG weekend warrior lump some pecan and apple chunks and lite it off. :-D Never used this drum at any higher temp then 230⁰F and no colder than -10⁰F so figured I'd crank it up to 300⁰F and it worked like a charm ran rock steady at 300⁰F with 2 intakes open no insulation :clap2: its -38⁰F out. Cook went perfect tasted GREAT. My first Pork Loin!! Had to cook the GF a ribeye she works at 4AM and wouldn't be awake for the Pork Loin. Want to give Sandiegobbq thanks for the advice on the loin cook temp and ideas in chat, was my first time cooking a Pork loin and was short notice idea :thumb:

Yep lots of snot!! That truck doesn't move much anymore I'm storing it for my little brother... he needs to rebuild the trany(meaning I will have to for a couple case of beer) to make it run 100%

Can't wait for the snow!

BBQ Bandit 11-18-2011 03:07 AM

That must be an all-time lowest ambient temp... cranking out the thin blue smoke.... successfully even. (Snaggletooth mod)

Thanks,

Next time we get a cold spell may see if I can push it more... Love showing that if your willing you can smoke yr round, no such thing as taking the winter off. The smoker is willing if you are.

-38! I'm not sure if my blood even flows when it's that cold! :-D

Daddy-O 11-18-2011 07:21 AM

Wow, impressive. Thought I was extreme smoking below 10 last year!

smokingj 11-18-2011 09:16 AM

I mean if I was queing in that weather, I'd have snot for a month....LOL:-P!!

kydsid 11-18-2011 09:44 AM

That's how we do in the 907!!! :D

You beat my personal record of 3 degrees above 0. But not often that cold down in the big city.

Have to say I don't mind not having to deal with snow and temps like that when BBQ'ing nowadays, but come August I wish I was back home.

Redhot 11-18-2011 10:00 AM

That is one beautiful pork loin! The steak ain't bad either! :becky:

Smiter Q 11-18-2011 10:01 AM

Looking nice... thinking you are the ringer for "Most Extreme Brethren" :-D

---k--- 11-18-2011 10:28 AM

That's great! Dedication. :thumb:

I did a smoke last year when it was like -6* or so. How much fuel did it use? With two vents open and -34*, I'm guessing a bit more than normal. Consider wrapping your smoke with a welding blanket or some other type of insulation. It will help conserve charcoal, which will come in handy on a longer cook.

thenicksfam 11-18-2011 10:28 AM

I had no idea thermometers went backwards like that! Here in God's Country  We don't need them to go much past 40F.

A few beers help thin the blood  but up here we use the koozies to keep the beer from freezing.

Can't say what is normal my first time using lump, but had a full basket to start with used maybe 1/8 at the most. I'll take a pic when I get home. Yea blankets would definitely help on a longer cook and if its still this cold next week I'll be wrapping it up for the turkey. I got half a dozen "mexican" blanket the heavy wool ones. I always pick a few up when I go on vacation, I use them for camping and this kinda thing.

Randbo 11-18-2011 10:53 AM

Nice Job! I guess I should not worry about getting down to 45 degrees here on the coast.

BBQ Bacon 11-18-2011 11:06 AM

Nice to know that it can be done in such snowy conditions. I have hope for this coming winter.

tony69 11-18-2011 11:49 AM

Right on Pwa! I live in Minnesota & were heading that direction as far as the cold goes. Your sending that crap my way! Fark, I'm still not ready. Thats why we drink so much, gotta keep that blood a flowin. I'm working on getting all my UDS supplies together because all I have is my 22.5'' Weber & Smokey Joe, need more cooking space. Whoever says you can't grill or BBQ year round is crazy. I do all the time, wintertime is a good excuse to slip outside to my shop & get away from rugrats for a bit! Nice looking food ya got there. Stay warm & keep that blood flowin!

You better not spread that around too much or you'll have everyone moving up there and then with all of the building all of that beautiful country will disapear. I keep saying that as soon as I am able I am going to move up there and try my hand at bush flying. Maybe start out up around Seattle with Kenmore to get some seaplane and tundra training and see where that leads. :becky:

Sly-one 11-18-2011 03:14 PM

Well, it's overcast and about 75F here in SW Florida. You inspired me to brave the elements and smoke a chuckie, lol. Heck, I'm dreading the times when it will occasionally hit the 30's here, and you're doing it at -38F????? You is my hero! :clap2:

Ryan Chester 11-18-2011 03:17 PM

-38*F??? I can't even fathom that. Nice work!

markdtn 11-18-2011 03:58 PM

That is dedication! Good looking food. After you take it off, does it try to freeze between the smoker and the back door? Wow:thumb:

Here is a pic of fire basket after the smoke, I had if full and level'ish when I started. That's a 22.5 charcoal grate and 12" tall expando metal can make it bigger overlapped about 4" if I every find I need more :)
