Backwoods Smoker G2 models
I own a Backwoods Smoker Competitor and Party. I use the Competitor for KCBS comps and also I can cook 16 butts at a time for any catering jobs. The Party I just use for fun.
Recently BW announced a "G2" version for the Party and Chubby (Chubby is just a smaller Party, 4 racks instead of 6) which is 6" deeper allowing for a full size hotel pan to sit inside. Last weekend I got the chance to see the G2 model just before they got picked up by their new owner. Here they are side by side http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/01.JPG Here is the Party. 6" deeper and also a new color. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/02.JPG As you can see the full size 4" deep hotel pan fits nicely on the rack but I did have to remove the top rack first. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/03.JPG Here it is slid into the smoker. The racks are very heavy duty. A lot thicker and stronger than the original Party. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/04.JPG I removed the water pan so you are looking down onto the top of the heat diverter. Right below it is the charcoal basket and ash pan. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/05.JPG Here is a look at the heat diverter. It looks a lot thinner than the one on the original Party. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/06.JPG And here's a shot of the basket. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/07.JPG Overhead shot of the basket and ash pan. That's the water pan sitting on the ground on the left and the heat diverter on the right. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/08.JPG One thing I don't like on my Competitor is that the thermometer probe tip will poke into an aluminum pan. Not so on the G2 Party. I was able to slam the door here and the tip never touched the pan. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/09.JPG Four butts fit on the rack with room to spare. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/10.JPG A decent size brisket fits too. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/11.JPG Here is the Chubby. Same racks...just less of them. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/12.JPG Here you can see that there is no spare room above the charcoal basket like there is with the Party. http://unclebudsbbq.com/pics/G2/13.JPG I may see a pair of G2 Partys in my future. I like the idea of big meats on one and the later meats on the other. |
Stainless doors really make them look classy :caked:

I like the look of the G2s, especially the Chubby, but in my mind the Party G2 is way overpriced. It's what, $800 more than the Extended Party (which in my mind is already overpriced) for only 3 inches deeper and a better firebox. It's also $400 more than a Gator but really not that much larger. And with the Gator you get the SS doors.
I don't pretend to know the costs associated with building these things but I don't understand why the Party line seems to have premium pricing over the Fatboy and Gator (when comparing comparably equipped cookers). |

Nice. It's about time that BWS realized that people like to put hotel pans in their cookers. Even the Extended Party couldn't hold them. I was once quoted a price of a custom Party that was large enough for hotel pans, and it was only $200 more than the EP. I think Heard some one say at The Jack that they will remove stainless doors from any cooker that comes with it and lower the price. I could have been wrong though, so don't quote me on that.

Those look familiar.....

The skinns are now galvanized and thicker which added to the cost along with a few other things.

I regret not adding extra sliders for the grates on my Gater. It comes with 5 grates and that is a lot of real estate, but the spacing leaves a lot to be desired IMO, especially when you have that thermo stem at the grate level on the Gater. Good to see it has been addressed on the G2's, still it would be the first option I'd consider.
The ash pan on rails of the charcoal tray is a nice touch. |

They look great. But it looks like a lot of paint over spray in the cooking chamber. Backwoods cook some crazy good ribs!

No room between the charcoal firebox and the diverter could be problematic for the Chubby, no?
