Need to find custom pitmaker in Texas ASAP!

Hey guys, my boss just told me today that he wants to have a contest/giveaway for our customers and wants to get a trailer pit. I need help finding a builder I can call that *hopefully* has something ready to go or almost ready to go that can get me a pit by December 17. Klose only has a 20"x5' family reunion available which my boss thinks is too small. Pits by JJ doesn't have anything available. By boss thought both Langs and Gators looked cheap. Jambo has a 6 month back log. I'm out of ideas. I'm hoping to find maybe a smaller builder who does great work but just isn't known so he doesn't have the huge wait like some of the bigger guys.

BTW, I'm in the Dallas area and we're willing to travel or pay delivery for a pit.

Any help guys?

How about http://pitmaker.com/ or http://www.easttexassmokercompany.com/ ?

chad 11-28-2012 02:19 PM

Or Gator in Houston: http://www.gatorpit.net/

Just got an email from David Klose, he only mentioned the 20"x5' pit but now it looks like he could also finish off a 30"x6' pit which is more what we're looking for. Hopefully that works out but please keep the recommendations coming!

Man, if only I could look at a Gator or Lang and think, "What a cheap piece of junk!" Your boss must be sitting on a pile of mulah!!

Maybe he should look at functionality over what actually looks "good". If he is turning down Langs and Gators then I'm not sure what companies will satisfy him.

Untraceable 11-28-2012 03:08 PM

wow, Gator's are the farthest thing from cheap. is it because its flat black paint and not glossy automotive paint?

So does he sound like the pickiest guy in the world? Now you know what I'm dealing with.

But to clarify, he doesn't think Langs and Gators look like junk and he knows they're awesome pits that will cook with the best of them. But those companies, especially Lang, fit into a certain price point; you get incredible value for your money all of the polished features being sacrificed. They basically look like the pit anybody's neighbor in Texas has. He wants something that will create a crowd and really *WOW* everybody. I've got a very, very generous budget to get that done.

I'll tell you if he had his way he'd get a Jambo, but he already called and their custom stuff is 6+ month wait with nothing ready to go.

Too bad you couldn't contact Jay at Spicewine a few months ago!

Also check with TuscaloosaQ here on the forum. He makes awesome smokers. I haven't seen them personally but if what I've seen on this forum is any indication he can probably make you anything you want.

What I want to know is, who do you work for that gives away a trailer pit? Any openings?:becky:

Big Ron 11-28-2012 03:53 PM

I know the owner at Pits By JJ and can try to get the order sped up. It will be hard to find an unclaimed new trailer pit unless someone cancelled an order. Most don't build them without having them sold.

pat 11-28-2012 03:56 PM

R & O smokers...similar to a jambo

BBQ Bandit 11-28-2012 04:00 PM

Sounds like you may need to add a little bling to an existing stock pit.

Yes, that's a 52" flat screen TV in the top. It's on a chain-driven electric lift.

I was hoping to find a maker who had a buyer getting cold feet or that has a buyer that isn't in a rush. Anyways, I've already spoke to both R&O and East Texas Smoker Co. and between these guys I think I'm covered.

Thanks for all the advice!

Oh and for those that were wondering, the giveaway is for our customers, not the employees, unfortunately. If anyone is a car dealer in the DFW area get in touch with me because you could be eligible to win a pit!

gtr 11-28-2012 05:08 PM

What a coincidence, I was just about to register Untraceable's Greasy Car Sales and BBQ Team LLC

This car dealer could probably use a cooker

Kyle, has your boss actually looked at a Gator Pit in real life, they are far from cheap. One of the best built pits out there. I would take a Gator over just about anything short of a Klose.

Trust me, I'm with ya. And he DOES know that. Thing is, he's trying to impress a crowd and it's the flashy stuff that does that, not a basic pit.

Right now he also has me trying to buy $400 Montblanc pens and he also just went to a gold and coin shop and came back with $8000 worth of goodies- everything from .90% silver 50 cent pieces (worth about $13 ea in silver) that he plans to just hand to people just for walking in the door, to 100oz bars of silver to 3 $500 bills. It's all about getting people excited and talking and interested in this stuff.

landarc 11-28-2012 06:29 PM

fancy knives, that is interesting, fancy Japanese kitchen knives

You will have NO problem finding a great pit maker in Texas. I, of course, am partial to Jambo pits, but Klose is a mighty fine pit maker too. I'm sure there are many others. Good luck.

bcaggie07 11-28-2012 08:12 PM

The R & O smokers are very nice and the Ritter's are great people to work with. I purchased a backwoods gator from them a year ago and they built me a custom cart for it that is awesome. They pay good attention to detail and make very sharp look pits. Not sure if you have seen the custom pit they built for themselves, but the blue trailer is the one they built specifically for them to compete on. Also, the green pit was built for the co-owner and is a very sharp pit.

4:20Q? Does he use a weed burner to get it started?

Ryan Chester 11-29-2012 03:59 PM

If something happens and you need to look at another maker. JP makes some bad ass pits. More along the looks of a Jambo.

I don't know. He did modify the intakes on the firebox and insulated the door. I'd like to find a source for those boiler thingies he is using. He turns them to adjust the air flow. Pretty cool mod, I thought.

gtr 11-29-2012 04:38 PM

He he, yeah, he does use that one. He fires it up at 4:20 am and again at 4:20 pm, I believe.

An update on this, we went with a pit from East Texas Smoker Company. http://easttexassmokercompany.com/

We're getting an RK250 with red trailer, double insulated fire box, star burners and propane start. The toughest part was simply finding someone who could get something done in our very tight time frame.

Would've leaned towards R&O if they could've gotten it done in time. Great people, great pits. Bought my Backwoods Fatboy from them two years ago when they were just about to start making their own. I'll have a trailer pit someday and have it narrowed down to R&O, Gator, or Jambo.

R&O Smokers outside of Forth Worth. Billie Overton

I have a custom designed Trailer on order!
