Best Competition Pellet Grill

We are a new team and have been using MAK pellet grills for competition. They are a fantastic piece of equipment. Dependable, consistent heat, and the smoke output is great. We are looking to move up to a larger grill (probably the new MAK 4 Star). FE seems to be the most popular pellet grill used for competition, though there are some other manufactures that are making pellet grills that would be great for comps, most notably Yoder. Is there anything else we should be looking at.

Will, I love the FEC 100. It has 4 shelves that can fit full hotel pans, is dependable, uses 2/3 a 20# bag of pellets per comp, you can cook all your meats on it, and it's easy to put in the bed of a truck. I don't know of another pellet smoker I would use for comps since I like the fact the FEC is vertical and has a small footprint.

If you want to chat email or pm me.

If you have to go with a pooper, for competition, you will not beat the FEC 100 and FEC 120 for pellet smokers.

Just something to consider along with the other good suggestions - Memphis is coming out with an elite that is much larger than the pro sometime this year should be about the same price as an FEC100

The request is for a recommendation for a pellet grill, but so far most of the responses are recommending a pellet smoker, not a grill.

Meat Man, are you looking for a recommendation for a grill or a smoker?

Meat Man 03-06-2012 11:43 PM

We are looking for a dedicated comp pellet smoker.

If I had a choice I would follow Scott's advice as the FEC100 works great for me and better for Scott. Look at the KCBS TOY Standings and Scott and his beautiful Wife are tops in the Nation having placed 2 Reserve Grand and a Grand Championship in their last three Competitions against some Great Teams. The FEC100 is a nice smoker and will make your Q more consistent. I do like the Mak for grilling.

I've been using an FEC for a few years now, no complaints at all that I can think of. Dependable, reliable and consitant and easy to clean and maintain.

I have also now have a Yoder 640 that I plan on using as this year too. So far I really like the Yoder too. It's maybe a little more versatile, I can crank up the heat and grill or sear something if I need to. Very solid and well built unit. I am very impressed at how well it seems to hold heat and recover temps.

Really interested in what you decide on Meat Man... We also compete on a MAK 2 Star plus 2 22" WSM's and were looking to expand into either a Yoder 640 or another MAK. Have you heard anything on when the MAK 4 Star is going to become available?

Spoke with MAK yesterday, 10 - 12 weeks. After experiencing a grease fire last weekend, looking hard at the FEC 120.
