Stacey,
I never use anything. Mine comes out fine. If your low and slow enough then it really wont matter. If you have a good rub and/or finishing sauce on it hten you will get your flavor you want. If you really think you need something try some water and put some texas pete, tabasco, etc. in it. Try some spices that are ground and will completely dissolve. Don't go crazy though, whatever you put on will be the first taste on the tounge. Try some sugar or molasses or honey too.

Ive used Warm water with some brown sugar dissolved in it.. or a touch of honey.. used both in a pinch... and dont laugh at this.. add a touch of pickle juice to the spray also.
or Warm water with a little rub dissolved in it... or hell with spray and mop them with beer.
Also, cherry juice if ya have that works nivce and gives them an interesting red tint.... Damn.. your a Brethren.. use some imagination!

Drink that good bourbon and they will be great if you rember the 3-2-1 method and don't leave'em in the smoker all night...

Try Wine or Aplle Cider Vinegar with some Worchestershire sauce added in.
Dissolve some brown sugar, garlicpowder and Ginger in some Soy Sauce.
OIl, Vinegar and some rosemary
I understand some people use some sort of Dr. Pepper Concoction.
Use your imagination.

Sorry it took me a sec to get back on the boards. I ended up trying just a mixture of oil and water, with some OJ in there to sweeten it a bit. Round 2 on my quest for the ultimate ribs....first time, the meat clung to the bones. This time around, the meat was still chewy. I have had troubles keeping the temps as the time wears on. Outside temps dropped and played havoc with my smoker temps. Hearing "I'm hungry" from the wiife every 10 mins wasn't helping either. ;) Good news is that the meat taste is good...with a good smoke rings...so the basics are there..just have to fine tune it. I'll continue this quest..then move on to some pulled pork before moving on to a brisket....toil...toil...toil...
You guys are great!
