Whether you think the McRib is BBQ nirvana or no better than styrofoam, the McRib is apparently set to make its return to all McDonalds stores across the USA on November 2nd, the first time it has been released nationwide in 16 years (read this story for more info) (http://www.geekosystem.com/mcrib-mcdonalds-november-2/). It is set to run for about 6 weeks or so. It will probably disappear as mysteriously as it has appeared and disappeared in stores since it was first released to an unwitting public back in 1981 (Yeah, I had to look that up).

Since we have not had a "Throwdown Special" in over 3 months, I thought you farkers could use a fun time. Yeah, I could have picked "Halloween" or something, but be honest, can anything be as equally "fun" and "scary" at the same time as the McRib? Some would even say tasty, much like those little candies all you kiddies get this time of year. So the McRib fits the Halloween theme if you ask me.

The winner will receive a prize. I do not yet know what this prize will be. I will decide later. You will like the prize. Then again, maybe you won't. But you'll get one either way.

Since this is a "Special" Throwdown, the rules are slightly different from a regular Throwdown. Please read these rules below before entering.

These are the rules for the "Return of the McRib" BBQ Brethren Throwdown:

1. Your dish must be either inspired by the McRib, or made from actual McRibs (if you are lucky enough to find one). You have a great deal of creative leeway here. For the works that are inspired by the McRib, you do not necessarily have to make a sandwich, you could make some sort of rib shaped meat patty if you so desire. Just so long as any reasonable person (in this case me) can determine that your entry is reasonably inspired by a McRib, or can see evidence that your dish was actually made from McRibs, then you are good. If not, then I reserve the right to disqualify an entry that has nothing to do with the McRib.

2. The item must be Grilled or Smoked during the cooking process, or feature Grilled or Smoked ingredients in a prominent manner. This means you can not enter a McRib sandwich as it comes from McDonalds. As we all know, that product is not grilled or smoked in any way.

3. Submitted dishes must be cooked between the moment this Throwdown is posted, until a later date when this Throwdown ends. The exact date will remain unannounced. This Throwdown will just suddenly end, much like the way McDonalds mysteriously releases and then ends McRib offerings at various stores.

4. All pics (any number) must be submitted within 24 hours from the time the Throwdown ends. So when the Throwdown ends, you can no longer cook your item, but you have 24 hours left to get your pictures uploaded.

5. You can make multiple entries into this Throwdown if you like. Just like at a bash, I would not expect people to share only one dish, but any number of dishes they would like to share.

6. You are allowed to touch up your photos for clarity, or to add the dish/item to a more interesting background if you like.

7. By posting your photos, you are granting consent for your photo to be reused for other BBQ Brethren related postings or materials.

8. Any joke photos, or photos of past creations you wish to show off must have a disclaimer stating that the photo is not intended to be included in the Vote thread.

9. If you have any problems with any of the entries, believing them not to be qualified for any reason, DO NOT COMPLAIN TO ME! Instead, please use the ***VOTE*** thread and exercise your power of voting against those entries. Any complaints posted in any Throwdown thread, or directed to me via any other means will be ignored.

10. If I find an entry to have violated these simple rules, I reserve the right to disqualify that entry.

11. As at any neighborhood block party, the kids are present and part of the festivities, so please keep your posts family friendly.

12. Since this is a virtual online bash, I expect everyone to have fun, but also remember there are kids around. Anyone caught not having fun will be asked to leave until they are fun again.

Best of luck, and even better eats to all!

Oh, some of you may be really wanting an idea of how long you have to enter something in this Throwdown, especially since it will end without notice, sometime in the future.

This Throwdown will be open for perhaps a few weeks.:heh:

That's as good of a hint as I am going to give you. You should have plenty of time to think of something, then prepare it, so don't worry about that.:thumb:

Why can't you enter? You can still cook something inspired by the McRib even if you can't buy one in Australia (unless there is some other reason).

Bill, are you requesting I bring you a week-old McRib as a gift when I'm Down Under? I've heard McDonalds sandwiches last for decades (http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20101012/bs_yblog_upshot/mcdonalds-happy-meal-resists-decomposition-for-six-months). Unfortunately, I can't do my first idea yet since there are no McRibs sighted in my area according to the McRib Locator (http://www.kleincast.com/maps/mcrib.php). I'll have to check back every few days I guess, or come up with something different.

It's my opinion that the "mystery date" start and stop for the McRib is entirely dependent upon the availablity of the "mystery meat" they use to assemble a McRib patty... for some reason, McDonalds gets the short end of the stick when it comes to mystery meat supply... however, Taco Bell has demonstrated that they have access to a lifetime supply of MEEF.

What I'm trying to say is "I'M IN!!!"

Yes, we could make our own but to make a proper homage to the original sadly I must taste one - I haven't had one since the early 90s and haven't tried one since they started using Shmoo Scraps.

OK, you be right Old Smoke. But I WILL stop by McDonalds on my way to PhattMatts and grab three or four McRibs to do my homework for this throwdown, have some raw material to work with if necessary, and put one in a diaper to take to Melbourne.

So I was in the store pondering things to grill up that day when some ground turkey caught my eye. For some reason I thought about the McRib Throwdown, and how a Turkey McRib would be so much healthier than a regular McRib. So with that I put my unplanned plan into action.

Using an ice cube tray that creates thin tubular shaped ice cubes for inserting into bottles, I formed my McRib patty with the ground Turkey.
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc150/bigabyte/Misc/2010_10_19/McRib01.jpg

After freezing it I had this perfectly formed rack of Turkey Ribs. Notice the bottom part of these ribs are skinnier than the top part. I believe this would be the Short End....
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc150/bigabyte/Misc/2010_10_19/McRib02.jpg

I put it in the fridge for a couple hours to thaw a bit, and then dusted it with some Spicewine Ironworks Hen & Hog Rub. This seemed appropriate since it was a bird, but was also ribs...
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc150/bigabyte/Misc/2010_10_19/McRib03.jpg

I cooked it offset on my kettle grill until it was done, with a glaze of BigButzBBQ Cranberry BBQ sauce. Look at those yummy Turkey Ribs!
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc150/bigabyte/Misc/2010_10_19/McRib04.jpg

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc150/bigabyte/Misc/2010_10_19/McRib05.jpg

Dear bigabyte,
As Executive Head of Personnel and Recruitment for McDonalds Worldwide it has been brought to my attention that you have cracked our secret process for making the McRib. It took our team of 75 top research scientists in the McRib Product Innovation Team (MRPIT) over 3 years to create the ice cube tray Rib forming process. We can only guess at the enormous product development effort put forth by you and your team to reproduce our results. We applaud your efforts.

Your innovation has greatly impressed us and we would like the opportunity to discuss with you an open position within our company. We are building a team of food scientists to create our new upscale product, the McLobster. All initial efforts to create a sandwich patty in the shape of a lobster have ended in failure. Consumer test groups which have sampled our early prototypes have described the formed product "McCactus", "McGumby" or "McFieldGoal". We believe your expertise in developing formed protein products and ability to improve upon naturally occurring food forms could help us to create our next big hit and help us to compete with restaurants such as Long John Silvers, Captain D's and Skippers.

Please contact us at your earliest convenience to discuss this exciting opportunity.

Regards,
Ron _M

I figured I'd better submit something before Chris calls this and wins by default. I am really surprised he didn't call it a few days back . I have a slightly different take on this throwdown. While I really don't care too much for the standard offerings, I have a lot of very fond memories of McDonalds. I believe their 99-cent Big Mac coupons sustained me through college. I clipped those diligently. Internationally, they're a road-trip lifesaver as in many countries, it's the only place you can actually get and eat a meal in less than two hours. Certainly, I harbor fond memories for specific restaurants. I remember some 15 years ago that Micky-Ds was the first renovation in old-town Tallinn. The next year we visited, the town was booming, and there was a rather large book by the restrooms containing letters from residents thankful for the aid and support that the restaurant provided. I know it's a part of the business model, but the Ronald McDonald House does a great service. I'm also partial to the restaurant in Terminal 4 of Barajas airport in Madrid, where I can get more than a slice of toast and a slice of cheese for less than $10 -- man that airport is pricey. They always have an interesting specialty sandwich; in fact, the specialty sandwiches outside of the US can be quite good. And I can't tell you how many times their restrooms have saved me, even if I never ordered anything. I am extremely thankful for some of the only sit-down toilets in Istanbul some twenty years ago. It's definitely different now, but back then it was really spartan. I am so thankful to McDonalds for introducing Western-style bathroom facilities to the developing world. Believe me, this contribution to humanity should not be overlooked.

It is the specialty sandwiches outside the US that are truly interesting. Yes, there is McLobster that has magically appeared and disappeared in Atlantic Canada over the past 20 years, much like the McRib. Most locals will tell you it is every bit as good as what you'd find in a restaurant, but for half the price. But that is boring compared to what you'll see in other countries. For instance, who isn't the least bit curious to try one of these?

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/McRib/100_0289.jpg

I decided to honor McDonalds by providing a McRib sandwich as I would like it to be in in a foreign country. Since these specialty sandwiches generally come in twos, I made a pair and went with an Asian theme. I had a few racks of ribs to BBQ. On one of them, I tried a Korean-style marinade (generally used for Bulgogi):

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/McRib/IMG_1113.jpg

The other was a bit more complicated. I really enjoy satay sauce. These are our typical ingredients:

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/McRib/IMG_1086.jpg

and here it is in preparation:

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/McRib/IMG_1083.jpg

Unfortunately, I was too lazy with the camera and didn't get the finished product, but it comes out something like this (from a previous throwdown):

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/curry/IMG_4985.jpg

I BBQ'ed some ribs using Foil Hat Rub (in a perfect world, McDonald's will use this and Bigabyte will be a very wealthy Brethren).

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/McRib/IMG_1089.jpg

As luck would have it, we have a replicator at our house. Seems all I have to do is put in a request for some bread dough, describe a few desired characteristics and it magically appears out of nowhere. I decided to top it with black sesame seeds and cooked them on the Oval also (not done yet, but you get the idea):

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/McRib/IMG_1090.jpg

I finally put together the two specialty sandwiches, the McRib Bulgogi and the McRib Satay. Instead of the pickle and diced onions, I topped with cucumber slices and green onion. I served these up with some sake, as outside the US, McDonalds does serve alcoholic beverages and this seemed appropriate:

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/McRib/IMG_1101.jpg

Granted, actual McDonald's McRibs would not look so meaty, but the ones in their advertising campaigns would.

Well, I was getting all my ingredients ready for my McRib and I discovered that the dough I set out for my buns mysteriously disappeared. :tsk: I'm not too upset, that is, unless they show up on the "Bread Throwdown." So, I had to change my plans and make a bunless McRib. I decided to combine all the requisite elements of a McDonalds meal, namely the fries, and create some small appetizers. Here is my ode to McRib:

It's going to be open for a few more weeks. The exact end date is a mystery, much like how the McRib mysteriously appears and disappears. I wanted to make sure people had time to make stuff after the McRib went on sale nationwide beginning today. So at least another 2 weeks perhaps.

McClerk: Three? You must be hungry.

Me: Well, not really. Can I get those without sauce, please.

McClerk: Without sauce? Ummm, sure.

Me: Thanks, can I just get the patties?

McClerk: No.

Me: Okay, just no sauce then.

McClerk: Are you going to eat them that way?

Me: No, I'm actually going to take them home and try to turn them into a gourmet meal to show off to my internet friends.

Wow, this actually tasted like food! It was quite yummy. :clap2: I will have to post the cook thread tonight...shouldn't really be posting this at work but saw that someone (won't mention names here) already used one of my ideas (McRibs in a blanket). So although I really did not feel like trying to put this together last night, I figured I better just in case someone else was thinking about it.

I tied 3 of the McRib patties around a bowl using cooking string. Then placed on foil, removed the bowl and put the stuffing in it - I was surprised but it actually kept it from caving in. I made a bread stuffing using celery, onions, fresh sage, parsley and dried cranberries - chicken broth for the liquid. Olive oil with cracked black pepper, salt, garlic and poultry season was brushed on the meat then off to the kettle. I used hickory chunks. When the mushrooms were done, I drizzled the juices left on the foil over it.
Chris, I'm posting 3 pix because I just can't decide which one I like best. Please choose your favorite for the TD entry. :thumb:

These were then breaded and fried and served with three sides and home made white gravy. Steamed green beans and mushrooms with a dash of Cavenders, garlic mashed taters and deep fried green beans. Mysteriously a 4 inch piece disappeared when I was slicing it up. I took the piece and whittled some ribs in it, coated it with Simply Marvelous Sweet and Spicy(love that stuff!), smoked it on the UDS for about 5 hours, slathering with sauce after 4 hours. Talk about shrinkage:icon_blush:! I put it together on a crunchy hard roll along with Romain lettuce, juicy beefsteak tomatoes, and mayo on the side. The McRibLT. Thanks for looking.

Funny thing, I just posted this picture on another site as a joke.
It does not qualify for your throwdown, but I thought I would share anyway.

So here is their story..........

This rack was delicately slow cooked for hours to achieve just the right taste and tenderness (probably too long).
The ribs were carefully removed from the container and placed on the rack for final cooking.
Each rib was then .... ever so slightly... "kissed" with their special secret sauce (puddled in the container) and placed in the oven to set the glaze.
At just the right moment, they were brushed again, for a second time, ensuring that they would tickle any kids taste buds.
We anxiously awaited the final result, with noses pressed to the glass ("Ouch, that's hot").
They were removed from the oven and let stand for 5 painful minutes (remember the nose) to redistribute the juices.
They were then, with surgical precision, sliced into individual, tongue teasing slices.
These award winning ribs were then placed in a very attractive serving container lined with crisp cilantro, chilled to the peak of perfection.
There was a brief photo op, then the lid was closed and the entry was rushed to the judges.
The judges (my kids) were amazed that this could be the same rack of ribs that we had started with.
There were "9's" flying everywhere on appearance!
Then came the taste and tenderness part of the judging.
The taste was less than "9's", but....
The tenderness jumped right back up to "9's" again! They said that they were so tender that they were falling off the bone! Wait, I didn't see any bones,
they must have just fallen right off them....!

To make a long story short, .........wait..........I have a sudden urge for them ribs right now!

Gheesh Ryan, you're going to be splitting the eggplant vote. I don't think that's a wise move, but you know what you're doing. If it were me, I'd just go with the bottom (super-duper-dupiddy-duper bacon eggplant surprise) as the first one appears to violate Rule 2 about grilled/smoked.

Hmm, might need some input from Chris... I guess I hadn't read the rules since they were posted... does it being cooked on the kettle (even though it was fried) not count?

There's a wide spectrum of opinions on the subject. Many think if they put the frying pan in the kettle it makes it grilled or smoked. By the same reasoning, if I put a big pot of boiling water in my kettle and put the ribs in that water to cook, then they would be considered to be grilled/smoked. To me, they are still boiled, but that's just my opinion. We do let the voters decide such matters, and voters all have different opinions.

In any case, I didn't notice that you had a liquid smoke element in that cook before I spoke, so you're good! :thumb:

At least he did not submit a chicken sandwich as a burger or something like that. I do have to question the lettuce wrap, as I believe most acceptable entries on this forum require either a bacon or sausage wrap. But, that is a choice. What next, McRibofu? Muaahaaahaaa!

ecode
11-10-2010, 08:04 PM
First and foremost I need to say that I don't hate McRibs. I enjoy the mild mass hysteria at their release, but I don't always partake. And I have to say this throwdown has added to my enjoyment of them even more. Thanks.

OK, now I know the McRib does not have the best reputation. The meat patty is a little suspect. I also know when we get bad meat we often associate the taste with old shoes. Looking at the McRib patty, it certainly isn't much of a stretch to imagine that it could just as easily have spent its life being a shoe. I decided to put this to the test and create an edible shoe using the McRib. Of course I needed a medium to work with, and the most obvious one was the potato. These were very carefully selected. I believe in a former life I may have been a cobbler:

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/IMG_0110.jpg

I tried to add a few details

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/IMG_0111.jpg

and made a few different styles

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/IMG_0112.jpg

These were carefully baked to perfection in my Oval:

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/IMG_0116.jpg

The last half hour they were unwrapped to firm up the "leather."

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/IMG_0117.jpg

Finally I did some detailing with some roasted red pepper

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/IMG_0151.jpg

and I also thought they could use a little more traction.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/IMG_0162.jpg

As you can see from below, there is a very nice tread

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/IMG_0157-1.jpg

and here is the finished product

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/IMG_0133.jpg

Now I know some of you may think this is completely crazy, but I want to draw your attention to this particular NASA photograph of the footprint on the moon made by the Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/ecodeps/McRib/footprnt.jpg

I think it is obvious that the similarity between this and the McRib "footprint" cannot be explained away as mere coincidence. The treads are virtually identical! Naturally, this leads to a number of unanswered questions, the most important of which is how did the McRib get to the moon in 1969, when it supposedly had not been invented by McDonalds until 1981, some twelve years later. Obviously there was a massive government conspiracy to hide the true purpose of the McRib and when the truth began leaking out, it was released by McDonalds as a sandwich.:spy:

Thanks for looking!

I decided to investigate this NASA-McDonalds conspiracy in a little more detail. Recent photos from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter show, for instance, the Apollo 14 landing site (a). On the bottom (b), we performed some phase-ratio imaging to distinguish anomalous surface features.

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/McRib/moon2-1.jpg

You can clearly see the location of the descent module. The darkened region is the result of fine dust settling on the surface, due to the engine blast when the astronauts left the surface. Also apparent is a well worn path to a region labeled ALSEP. Just what was this region and why did the astronauts visit it so often? I pulled this NASA stock photo:

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/McRib/moon1.jpg

I immediately noticed some very suspicious pixeling at the ALSEP location. Someone had tampered with the NASA photo archives. I spent several hours analyzing the photo and was finally able to reconstruct the original. I discovered this:

Well, I'll say this for the eggplant first timers...you don't have to eat the center section where all those seeds are. Thats pretty bitter. It's the meat between the skin and the softer seedy middle that is the best. Just in case someone wants to try again. i can only guess that maybe some of these McEgpplants had a bit of a bitter taste when biting into the seedy centers. I'm sure with enough bacon and frying though, it might be able to be covered up.

Gore
11-12-2010, 10:58 AM
Most people salt the sliced eggplant the night before and then rinse. This helps remove the bitterness. Personally, I like it bitter because then I don't have to add as much hops. :thumb: The long, thin Japanese eggplants I find are not bitter and do not need salting. We just slice, coat in EVO and grill. While we make a lot of fun of it, it is really good ... or it can be ... to some people ... apparently. The best fatty I ever had included eggplant as a principle ingredient. There is also a huge amount of eggplant disguised in Italian cooking.

bigabyte
11-12-2010, 11:07 AM
I've never tried an overnight salting before. Then again, most every eggplant that comes in my house winds up roasted and into some Baba Ghanoush because I like saying Baba Ghanoush so much. Would you like some Baba Ghanoush?

landarc
11-12-2010, 12:48 PM
You salt overnight? I just do it for a couple hours normally. Of course, I try to get unripe eggplants, once the seed ripen, they get bitter. Once it colors up, it is time to pick or buy them. I do like the Japanese and Thai eggplants that do not seem to be bitter under most circumstances.

The greatest hiding job of eggplant is eggplant parmigiana, you can't tell it is eggplant. Then again, you can't tell it is veal in veal parmigiana, it is just cheese melted on spicy tomato sauce.

Wow! Too bad about the phone, that thing looks killer!:hungry: I think every step had me drooling a bit more and more.

I said if anyone has anything planned and wants me to keep it open a bit longer that I would do that, so go ahead and do the other thing and I'll leave it open for it.

If anyone else is wanting to add another dish, please let me know so that I wait until I see your dish before closing this Throwdown.

Man, that is incredible, I would eat some of that for sure. I suspect trying to eat all of it would put me back under doctor's care. But, I would give it a try.

That looks amazing - the phone's limited resolution could not hide the tastiness of that tribute to the McRib.

Oh my...BBQchef33 you outdid yourself! That looks soooo...sinful. One thing's for sure, yours tasted better than any of the entries that used actual McRibs (myself included)!:thumb:

Very nice job Phil!!! I would chow down on that in a heartbeat!! :eusa_clap

I like the idea of using garlic bread too... add a bit more depth to it!

After all this hoopla over the McRib, I decided to walk to McD's today for lunch and have the original. Though it wasn't bad, I'm 100% sure I would prefer any of these entries.

I gotta admit, Im not big on ribs anymore. I guess i have had enuf to last a lifetime, but that damn sandwich after we finished taking all the pictures, got inhaled by my family and they are requesting another this weekend. it really was one of the best ones ive made. the bacon added alot to the onions, and the peppers gave it some mite that the plain ones didnt have. I may have to go out an buy a new camera for the next one. :)

Anyone who has any remaining entries to post needs to have them uploaded by this time tomorrow.

The vote thread for the McRib Throwdown will be posted tomorrow as well.

Thanks to all who contributed. I think this one is going to be one of the most memorable Throwdowns ever.

From your previous post, I thought this was closed last Wednesday! I had one more I was going to do to "fix" the McRib. There goes my chance at a Triple-Zero. Oh well, have to wait until next time.

I think it's because of all of the discussion within the Throwdown of how nasty McRibs are!:becky: If we had spun yarns about how great they were, we would have been the main focus of the story!:thumb:

The adage is any PR is good PR as long as they spell your name right.

On a separate note, am I late or early to mention that I am still laughing yet completely horrified by Deguerre's new avatar? The burlesque, ambiguously gay kangaroo/eggplant/ZZ Top one?
