I got an email last week from Andy that they are awaiting final approval from KCBS on their forms. I emailed him again this week but haven't heard back. He didn't provide any other info (cost, details). It's getting pretty close to where it will be difficult to pull off, but we're definitely considering it as well.

I put out an email and have not received a reply. If they don't have their S**T together six weeks out, I don't believe I am going to jump into the middle of that one. I may come out and visit the teams though since it is in my backyard.

We were thinking of adding it last minute anyways, so the fact that we haven't signed up yet doesn't worry me too much. And that it is right down the road from the house makes me not too concerned. But I am a bit worried about the overall planning if they really don't have anything ready yet...six weeks out! Assuming it's held at the Hardees Ice Plex wouldn't think water or electricity would be an issue. But still, no information on cost or anything.

I keep going back and forth on the weekend choice as well, right after Thanksgiving...normally a really busy weekend, but seems viable as well.

Wish they'd at least give a real response.

No idea of any details... few replies... seems a little iffy to me. I was trying to figure out a way to sneak out of the in-law's house in Michigan ON my wife's birthday morning and drive back to Missouri early for that one but I don't know. Seems like a bunch of people who don't know a thing about BBQ comps deciding to put on a BBQ comp. My apologizes if I'm wrong about that! And who needs forms approved by KCBS?? Never heard of that one.

It's a fundraiser for a hockey team, so my guess is, no they don't have a clue about Q comps. They probably saw how big the ballwin/wildwood one was and though, shoot we can do this and make a lot of money.

They're probably in for a surprise as it'll take a while to really get a contest established and profitable.

From an email conversation a couple of St. Louis teams are having.

"We just recieved the proclamation from Gov. Nixon on Monday that is making the Competition a State Championship, so we are working with the KCBS and our IT team to get the website with all the information and applications active. I will send you an email as soon as it is live. It will be at www.stlbanditsbbq.com"

Looks like the are putting a website up for it now. Dunno why they can't send out emails to people that have queried, but...

And they are showing turn in times starting at 11am not noon. Is that legal for KCBS?

And EARLY BIRD registration is $250!!! After Oct 30 is $350!!! That's just for the 4 main cats.

They have contestant, judges and vendor application links now, but they sure are proud of their first year event. Looks like you only have two weeks to get in at $250 for a 10x20 space. After Oct. 30th the entry fee is $350. So far, no money guarantees and the turn in times are an hour earlier than normal.

I have only entered one comp this year where the payout schedule and guarantee was not advertised by registration time and I don't intend on doing that again.

Yup. Bandits hockey...meet one year and never happening again competition. I know it's a fundraiser, but you don't get the funds from the competitors. You use them to draw in a crowd. I didn't even see the vendor app. Just checked it, there's nothing to it. Looks like I can come and sell anything!!!

Strongly thinking I'm gonna pass. Agreed on the no posted payouts. This seems badly organized and already I was worried about trudging straight out the day after Thanksgiving (which makes it that much harder to get supplied and prep).

I was interested in this one until I saw the details...they've got to be crazy. So much for another contest in the STL area, this one will never make it. $250 for EARLY entry...wow. 20x20 (changed on the web site) for spots...and then we have to add more for electricity??? But you do get 4 free tickets to a game or something like that...waa waa waaahhhh (trumpet sound..) and hang out with Blues alumin...grrr.

I rarely attend contests that are over $200 in entry fees and that's usually only if I like the contest - a first time go 'round - not happenin' for H*QUE on this one.

I talked to Dawn at KCBS this morning and volunteered to help this organizer out. I agree with all the previous posts on cost versus payouts. If they will let me help them, I will try to point them in the right direction. St Louis needs more contests, but not at the cooks expense. I can show them how to raise money without it coming from the teams. If they call me, I will keep you all posted.

I wouldn't have paid over $200 for a 4 item contest. And I sure as heck wouldn't pay $350. At $175 they would probably be able to draw a lot more teams. At $250 - $350 I'll be interested to see how many they can get. Not sure what their target is.

Hello everyone, my name is Gene Goycochea, I am a KCBS rep, a CBJ instructor, KCBS Board member, Competitor and VP of California BBQ Association.....

I will be one of 2 reps at the contest in question, I will be helping with the organization, I have run over 20 contests in the past, I have repped hundreds.... I can answer pretty much any questions that you have....

This contest currently has 14 teams signed up, it should be a qualifier....
This contest will have indoor restrooms 24 hours a day....
This contests awards ceremony will be at intermission on the ice at a hockey game...

I can be reached at 619-600-8320 if you have any questions about the contest, I will do my best to answer them for you...

Gene, typically hockey games don't start till the evening. The schedule for this night in particular indicates that the game STARTS at 7:05PM. If the awards are during the first intermission that is likely to be close to 8pm! You really expect that teams want to stay 7 hours after the last turn-in for the start of awards?

They have over a dozen lockerrooms at the ice plex, so assuming they leave it open during the night for the teams there is the plus that they not only would have bathrooms but decent showers as well.

Thanks very much for joining the forum and helping out, as well as all your service to KCBS.

Gene01
10-22-2010, 11:07 PM
it is also my understanding that there are multiple games and that awards will be much earlier than that. I know that the turn in times were moved to an hour earlier so that the awards could be set to coincide with the games intermission.

Gene, from the sounds of things, I hope the hockey team has someone... ANYONE who has experience with barbecue comps helping out. We thought about it but somewhere, there's a disconnect. The contest is a Friday Saturday contest with turn in's starting at 11:00 am and every half hour after that, the contest will be successful, I will fly in to assist a couple of days in advance and the contest will run smoothly. Stephanie is very organized and her sister Carla who runs contests in California will be there orchestrating the event as well..... she has experience running bbq events for Harrah's Casino's.

Ok, peoples choice is very common in the west, it is where you as a team take your leftovers from the competition and anything else you wish to cook, you sell through tickets provided by the organizer samples at 2.00 each, you will be reimbursed for the tickets at 50% this means that you get a dollar and the charity gets a dollar from every sample that you sell to the public, teams in the west do this to recover their entry costs and for their supplies...
a win win for everyone, the charity wins and you the cook recover some or all of your expenses and the public gets to tast better than average food, this is what gets them involved.....

Gene,
Sorry if this was already covered, or maybe I just missed it on the website, but I don't see anything about STL County Health Department Temporary Food Establishment permits.

Is this covered in the registration fee? Also, if so, does that include HD Certs to vend for the People's Choice?

Not trying to be a pain, just a little confused on that.

Gene,

I think he was more or less asking who provided the meat. The competitor or the event....Around here, the contest organizer usually provides the meat to be cooked and turned in then sampled out. $2 for a sample of bbq seems pretty pricey too. Its usually $10 for all the samples. Just my thoughts.

in the peoples choice, when someone buys 5 ticket packages, they get an additional ticket to give to the team that they feel has the best food, at the end of the day, that team will receive a prize above the regular KCBS awards. prize will be an authentic jersey in addition to the money that they receive from the sales that offset the entry costs and supplies.

Gene,

The last turn-in is at 12:30 and awards are at 3:00. That is a 2.5 hour window to sell leftovers. Are you telling the public about this small of a window to purchase food? Is this how it typically works out West?
It seem to me you will be a bunch of people asking teams about buying food during crunch time.

Thanks,

out here in the west, most teams will start selling as soon as the first category is turned in, some teams even start before that giving a 4 hour window.... this is if they have a teamate or volunteer who is not involved in the turn in process... giving you 4 hours of sales....

Ok, we are needing 11 more judges to catch up to the team count... if you know a CBJ or you are a CBJ, please sign up to help, we are trying to see if we can get more space to allow for more teams, should know in a day or two, only have 24 judges at this time and want to have 100% cbj's...

Gene,
I'm a CBJ. I'll judge.

Thanks to all who signed up as judges in the past 2 days, this added 14 more judges to what we had....and gives us what we needed plus 2...

I will see if I can get the Organizer to get a team list up in the next day or two..

Thanks,

Gene

I tried to email Andy over the weekend about getting an application in and no word. Gene - any help about the smoke signal I sent would be appreciated.

16 I beleive. Wasn't going to judge this one but what the heck. I don't have anything else planned and I haven't judged a contest since Oct 9th at Arthur, Il.

Good luck Nate. I'll probably stop by and see ya after judging. That is if your not to busy with the peoples choice :-P.

we have 30 teams registered and 46 judges (all CBJ's), awaiting the decision on extra space becoming available to us for additional teams...

Shouldn't the CBJ judges that signed up online expect some sort of confirmation?

I was thinking the same thing about the teams. This is one of the reasons I asked for a team list.

Gene,

Since you know the count of both would you mind listing them please?

thinking of cooking with QUAU for this one. He's an auto, so wins mean nothing to him if the contests are under 50 teams... :becky:

That's funny thinkng 4 Smokin' Butts could fit into a 20 X 70' spot!!!! Might have to double that space...

It really was not bad. I would prefer doing a contest in those conditions rather than the 100+ degrees I've done in the past.
