I've put in a new fire grate this weekend for my bandera and was getting started on a baffle and charcoal basket when I came upon a problem. I'm having a heck of a time cutting this 22 gauge sheet steel. I've gone through a couple pair of snips, a jig saw, a circular saw and a high speed cutter. Nothing is doing a decent job of cutting this.
Any suggestions would be welcome as I'm getting ready for a labor day smoke-a-thon!!!!

Your High Speed cutter is this a die grinder with aluminum oxide cutting disc that spins at @25000rpm. This is what I used for mine Draw your outline and then slowly make a groove then you can just keep making passes until your through

Yeah that's the type of high speed I'm using with my air compressor. But the steel was really eating through my disk in a hurry. Initially I Tried my dremel with a cutting disk but that disk lasted no time at all.
Thanks CWF, I may just have to go buy 3 or 4 cutting disks and be done with it.

RotoZip. Made real quick work of sheet steel. Used 3 bits up, but made it thru pretty quick.

Hell, I used straight, left, and right hand snips on mine.. However, my hands did ach for three days after doing so. There is no question about it, the darn stuff hurt mah bad!

hes using sheet steel, not sheet aluminum. Hand snips gonna cut that without some hydraulic/bionic gloves?

I stand corrected, I was cutting aluminum, not steel.

A band saw with a metal cutting blade will make quick work of it. You might call a few machine shops that have a metal cutting shear. Should not be all that expensive to have them do it for you. Adjutments on those machines are just a knob to turn.
If you continue with what you have just be sure those safety goggles are on!

Rusty you're right about safety goggles. You gotta have 'em, I got pelted with steel shavings the entire time I was working on that stuff. My glasses are the only thing that's kept me from having to shop for a nice new pirate eye patch today

You could have gotten one from the board pretty cheap about a month ago.

are you cutting straight or curved cuts? I used a abrasive blade on a skill saw to cut thru 1/4 propane tank... machine shops around here charge 20.00 a cut
hydraulic/bionic gloves?
Wife's got a pair of those.

Yeah, And I would if big al were still making boxes, but they were sold out by the time I got my dera.
I went back and got a 5 pack of 3.5 inch cutting disks. And followed CWF's advice about laying a grove then just making continual passes. That works pretty well just seems to chew up the disks a little and is a bit time comsuming. But on the upshot it winds up being a pretty clean cut :)
Thanks all

Hehe, had almost forgotten about him. Saw him in a restaurant over in Dallas several years back. He seemed to have held onto some of that cash he got in the mail.

Damn, ............. As a metal framing carpenter for over 20 years, you can definitly cut 20 ga with a good pair of hand snips. 22 gauge is obviosly a tad easier.
here's 1 for $30
