I guess I will post the same thing I posted in the "dead" thread mentioned, since it seems relevant to the new direction of this thread.

"Has anyone read Rod Gray's new Blog post on preparing to go to the Jack? He outlines everything you should do while you're there to make the most of it. I got goosebumps reading it. I am so damned excited we were lucky enough to get drawn I can barely contain myself!

Here is a link to the blog (I hope it is okay mods)

We got two rooms somewhere nearby. My uncle has had a hotel reserved since January. He didn't tell me because he knew I would kick his butt for jinxing us! lol!

I was thinking Mary Bobo's for dinner on Thursday. Hopefully the whole Cru can still get in. I am still figuring out numbers.

We are definitely bringing the baby and can't wait for you guys to meet her! We even have a Big T'z onesie so she can wear our colors.:-P

Hopefully we'll see you at the Royal first--you all are competing right?

Congrats again to all the teams that qualified for the draw and another congrats to all the teams that have been invited.

When is everyone headed down?
We're tentatively planning on leaving KC on Wednesday morning with hopes to arrive in Lynchburg around 8-9pm that night.

Mark/QN - will someone still be on the grounds at that time to lead us to a place to set up? If not, we'll just park out of the way and unload a generator so we have some power until morning when we can be lead to a spot.

Look forward to meeting many of those who we've yet to meet and seeing those we have meet before again.

We have a room at the Mulberry house for Wednesday thru Saturday and reservations at Ms Bobo for 11 am on Friday. We'll be setting up sometime on Wednesday and after reading the blog from Rod and listening to others and getting pm's from QN, we be pumped. We also will be at the AR in space 784. Can't wait. The biggest thing was finding out we made the draw and then winning in Bedford and toasting with Jorge from the present he gave us. THANK YOU Jorge.

Hi there everyone! Long time listener, 2nd time poster....something that I intend to become better at...You guys are just awesome and I love reading your posts.

I got my first call to The Jack for this year and I'm getting pumped!!!! I've been there before (2008) with Tom and Kay Wallin from Dances with Smoke (Renton, WA) where I cooked the side categories...wow what a rush! Reading Rod's blog brought all the memories back...he's 100% right on.

I'll be driving from Portland, Oregon along with a fellow team member and meeting up with my sister who lives in Nashville and some other PNWBA competitors who'll fly in.

Anyway...it's like, 5 weeks away and I've got 2 more contests in that time so I can't get too distracted...YIKES!!

Even though I'm new here, I look forward to meeting ya! Please stop by Sugar's Barbecue and say howdy!

I did the pre-order barrel head last year which worked out well. But once I got there they had custom 2009 barrel heads for sale that were less expensive and still real nice. The signatures are great (take your own Sharpies) and we have ours hanging in the kitchen nook area. I did a Jack blog entry as well, you can see it here: http://www.swampboys.com/Jack%20Daniel's%202009.htm I remember it like it was yesterday...

Official team check-in is usually from 12pm - 2pm on Friday followed by the cook's meeting at 2pm. Parade line-up is usually Friday afternoon around 4pm - 5pm. Parade goes to the visitor center and you get on busses to go to the dinner on the hill there.

I think you can actually by beer in Moore County, and consumption on private land is always legal. Story I heard was that last year was the first year that JD didn't subsidize the police force for the extra work policing the event, so they took it out on the patrons. I never got hassled, but I saw others, even those on teams. Def be careful unless you hear otherwise.

If you don't rub the police in the face with whatever you are drinking... You won't have any problems... I wouldn't leave empty beer cans., bottles (even Jack) laying around... Honestly, I wouldn't use red cups. i'd use the one's that are provided int he goody bag or buy one of the Jack plastic cups from the hardware store. They also have supplied the head cooks with a nice metal mug...

All I can say is be cool. You won't have a problem.

I went down as a spectator last year, here's kind of what I recall:

Thursday night various teams were huddling under canopies and EZ ups. At that point law enforcement was pretty cool asking us to keep the drinking concelled (in cups, behind canopy walls, etc) But warned us if they saw any open bottles they would issue tickets.

Friday (during the day) I was touring the town so I don't know what the atmosphere in the park was. Come parade time, law enforcement was checking every cup as it left the park. Not sure if they asked those with alcoholic beverage to dump or issued tickets. Note - don't have an alcoholic beverage in hand during the parade of teams. (Second note - at the end of the parade you will get on bus to take you to team dinner, so take a bag/clothing for when the sun goes down)

Fri night in the park after dinner - I was lit, so I don't remember. But I did hear stories of some people getting ticketed.

Saturday in the park is very busy with lots and lots of people - again I heard of others getting tickets but others who got warnings.

All in all, I think it had to do with the attitude of the individual and the law official as if they were going to give a ticket or a warning.

I think the best bet is to keep the open containers within a team area rather than walking around. Keep it in a cup and stay well mannered.

I've been warned about this every year, but this past year they were VERY strict. Saw a member of a team almost get arrested and they were smelling contents of peoples cups.

Last year we got our barrelhead and then took it here: http://lynchburgreclaimedlumberco.com/ You'll find then down the stairs next to the Iron Kettle restaurant on the square, just a couple doors down from the hardware store. The barrelhead we got was finished/lacquered, with a black JD brand in the middle of it. After LRL did the engraving of our logo I filled the engraved lettering in with one of the black Sharpies, so that it went well with the JD brand.

Honestly, I wouldn't use red cups. i'd use the one's that are provided int he goody bag or buy one of the Jack plastic cups from the hardware store. They also have supplied the head cooks with a nice metal mug...

All I can say is be cool. You won't have a problem.

As a Police Officer I can tell y'all this: the attitude of the guy (or gal) you are dealing with dictates how I respond to open container/public drunk type situations. Be cool, don't be blatant about your boozin', and if asked to do something (like dump your beer), cooperate. It will save you tons of hassle and generally get you a warning. Red cups are a dead give-a-way to beer. So use anything other than that. As a disclaimer, I've never been down to the Jack and don't know what the local Police Officers are like. This is General advice from a yankee...

Last year we got our barrelhead and then took it here: http://lynchburgreclaimedlumberco.com/ You'll find then down the stairs next to the Iron Kettle restaurant on the square, just a couple doors down from the hardware store. I had my laptop with me, emailed them a jpg of our team logo, and they engraved it perfectly onto the barrelhead -- it turned out awesome. We also got some barrel staves personalized that way for gifts.

How much was it and what was the turnaround time???

I'm curious which barrelhead product it was you bought to have this done. I got a sheet from the general store with a bunch of different items on it and can't figure out which one would work best.

Possibility of sending me that sheet??? info at theslabs dot com
Thank you!

Honestly, I don't remember how much we paid -- I think the coolness factor made it well worth it. Turnaround time was a few hours on Thursday, as they were pretty well busy.

Here is the pre-order form that they sent me after I asked for items specific to this year's contest.

The other file with the barrel products on it is too large to upload, so I will have to email that to whoever asks for it.

I just ordered a custom barrel top with our team name on it through Lisa at the JD shop. $162 (less 20%). Will be ready to be picked up while we are there.

Nice souvenir.

Got an email back from Craig, looks like we will be setup "in a field next to the contest site" due to the size of our rig...anybody have experience with this? How far away will we be?

Not exactly sure where he is talking about, but nowhere in the park, and it will HAVE to be in the park, will be very far from turn-in. Usually, it is not the distance, but the crowd, that gives some problems.

Sounds like its an area with a creek, mentioned putting hay down

it's always wet. Plan on getting straw and having to clean straw out of your trailer for another year!!! :thumb: Like Phillip said. the crowds for turn in time is what usually gets in the teams way. It's packed with folks and they don't really understand why we are such freaks about them staying away from our clam shells...

But the field sounds like outside the track area? Otherwise, the big rigs go along the creek. I hope someone keeps my spot clean... :becky:

This sounds like the open area behind the horse ring where the international teams are located. This is definitely in the park. We have had teams there before. It is an open, flat, grassy area. Should not be too bad unless there is a lot of rain. It is not too far from turn in and the crowds back there are usually not as bad as up front closer to the main entrance. There is no power there and limited access to water.

In search of some seasoned splits of wood to pickup at the Jack. Any of Hickory, Oak, Pecan, Cherry would be great. Cash or Harpoon trade. :-D

thanks

I'd talk to Steph. My thinking is she will probably bring a cord of split wood and probably stack it for you if you included some lobstah's with that beeyah... I'd suggest the IPA vintage... Just sayin... :becky:
