Here ya go. Dont go crazy with the comments. I know they are not trimmed properly ( i was so damn sick of tired of all the trimming i typically do , these were 3 packs trimmed in 15 minutes) I know the parsley is a bit rough (It was my sons first time make putting greens and I though he did a great job, the extra parsley was put in to cover bone ends) Just a number from 2-9.I will reveal the scores some time later

7

the two on the bottom right should be flipped so the leg joints are all pointed in the same direction... I think would of given it a bit more uniform appearance even though the trim
is 'natural'. Tidy up the box a bit and I give it an 8

On your top two pieces there are a few places that I would touch up with sauce. For example, on the top right thigh, the bottom left of the thigh has a spot that stands out. The parsley kind of detracts from the chicken a bit because it seems a little sloppy. I'm not sure I'd see all this in a 5-7 second glance. I love the color!

7-8

That seems a little harsh. Doesn't a 5 score equal 'average'. Far from "total crap" don't you think?

6 is average, 7 is above, 5 has issues.

Since judges are directed to judge only the meat's appearance, I'd say 8 or 9. The triming seems fine and the color of the chicken looks great. Maybe they appear to be a tad bit over sauced, but maybe that's the picture. I can't really find too much to criticize with respect to the appearance of the meat, and the meat only. I'd surely look forward to biting into any one of them.

Ah! Now that makes perfect sense! If those are "craptastic" and worthy of 5's I don't think I'd be posting pictures of my chicken in the future :becky:. Now excuse me while I take my place at the back of the bus.

Looks like tasty BBQ, and the color is very good, but for competition presentation...you've already mentioned some of the issues. Not trimmed carefully enough and parsley is rough. Additionally, all the pieces are not going in same direction, the right center piece is a little small. A little uneven on the sauce, especially the left side center piece, black spots (and a couple of white ones?) not very pretty.
Appearance: 7

The chicken looks really good. I'd give it at least an 8 leaning towards a 9. I would attribute the smudge to the table captain or the trip to the turn table.

Would you really pick all that up in the 5-10 seconds you get to look at the box? (I'm not judge yet and I really want to know.)

5 was a total joke. I told him 8 on the phone. Shart he used my chicken recipe, if he only made it look as good as mine!!!!

As an experienced competition cook, I find it very easy to look at an entry and in a very short amount of time see the things that are appealing, the things that are not and to be able to articulate the reasons why.

I don't find it at all surprising that an experienced judge would be able to make the same kind of distinctions just as quickly.

As CBJ's , we are taught not to judge the greens. The greens can help improve the score for apperance. A "putting green" is very nice and may help improve the score by making the meat look more appealing.Your son did a nice job and I would not cut the score for not being "Perfect". As for the meat, I would say an 8 is a fair score.:clap2:

I would give it a 7. It is above average but not excellent

Thanks all. Now I am a CBJ and have been doing comps for 5 years. I am not my own harshest critic. I call it like I see it. I was a bit surprised on the appearance scores I received. I would given it a 7 , 8 at best.
It was 9 9 9 9 9 9. The chicken finished 8/72, I was shocked. The taste were the only scores that were a bit low.

Steve,

I give it an 8, possibly a 9. It looks delicious and I would have liked to taken a bite. I don't think straightening the pieces, or making them more uniform etc. would affect my judgement. It simply looks appealing and like something I would enjoy sinking my teeth into.
