Congrats to Rhythm 'n QUE, great job against a powerhouse lineup. Also congrats to Jeff, Big Creek BBQ for 3rd. I'm really surprised at some of the names toward the bottom of the list, but with that level of competition someone is gonna be last. It would be interesting to see the scores, and how far apart from first to last was. I would have loved to judge this contest.

Looks like the defending CBBQA Champ handled their business back on Oklahoma this weekend. Nice job by Vince and Alexa.

I think the low score was like 650 something, which wins many a contest...

Congrats to al that walked!

Congrats to Vince and Alexa! I sampled the brisket, after it had been sitting out for a while and it was still SOLID! I'm wishing I'd tried the chicken that Alexa offered, but I'd had enough BBQ for the week at that point:wink:

A common theme heard from cooks is that they didn't want to finish DAL. When you look at that field, there would have been NO shame in that:laugh:

When Todd and I talked over the weekend I think we agreed that we'd like a solid finish and one good call. We didn't get the call, but at the end of the day I felt pretty good about everything.

Everybody got all four entries in on time, survived the blast furnace that Oklahoma can be in August, and had a great time.

A big "Thumbs Down" to Mr. Big Creek BBQ for raising the anniversary bar for the rest of us at awards!:-P

This was a great contest. A "little" on the warm side. lol! We were honored to be cooking along side all those teams. I wish it would have been cooler so more people would have been out and about.

Congrats Vince & Alexa! It was great meeting you finally. Hope to see you again sometime soon!

Congrats to all who braved the heat on the asphalt parking lot and kept on cookin'. It truly was hotter here the week before so it could've been worse.

It was great to see old friends, meet new ones, and cook with Smoke on Wheels once again. Two calls for Kim and Andy did my heart some good, and just circulating amongst the top 25 was awesome.

Things I learned this weekend:
Heat, humidity and asphalt are a bad mix.
Standing in a pan of ice and water does very little to ameliorate the foregoing.
Sixteen-plus hours in the car will make your butt square.

*AND*

BBQ people are the BEST wherever you go, and wherever you're from. Teams that have been like rockstar names to us, greeted us and made us feel as if we were old friends that they just hadn't had the chance to meet yet. I'm in awe of all that you represent to the sport.

I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around the collective talent of that field. As pointed out above, the pack scored tightly together, and any combined score there could have won a good number of contests.

I would have loved to be in the judging tent, and hated to be in the judging tent! When the caliber of food is that high, how do you differentiate without comparing? Not everything can be 9-9-9, and determining the breakpoint between an 8 and 9 must have been so hard. (BTW, we got a comment card on a 6 :becky: )

The contest and sponsors treated the teams like superstars, they really went all out. At the cooks' meeting, we were informed that our "goody bag" was a flatbed cart loaded high with Sam's Club swag -- flats of water, cases of sodas, Gatorade and Red Bull, paper products, charcoal, gallons of sauce, foil, seasonings -- totally OFF THE HOOK! The teams were also treated to a VIP reception at a nearby Sheraton with wonderful appetizers and a bar stocked with Budweiser and Pepsi products, and we were able to meet several sponsors' representatives and express our appreciation. On Saturday, Tyson had a booth giving out free shave ice and Gatorade so we didn't drop in the inferno.

Carolyn, Mike, Dawn and Kelly were everywhere, making sure that everything was handled and even taking time to chat with us in the middle of all they had to do. This was our first contest repped by Mike and Theresa Lake, and their expertise makes us look forward to cooking under them again.

This contest was, I think, a watershed moment. It was an amazing, rare chance for teams from widely disparate areas to compete head-to-head, the closest thing to a "playoff" format we've yet seen.

Thanks to all for their kind congratulations -- this contest was a defining point in our team history, and one we'll remember always.

At this point I would remove the 'Jack Watch' and list that I had the 8... :becky:
