How do I go about finding out about competitions in my area in Southern California?

One place is the KCBS web site, kcbs.us (http://kcbs.us/events.php?str=ca&fromDate=mm%2Fdd%2Fyy&toDate=mm%2Fdd%2Fyy&search=Search)

You can also check the CBBQA web site...

Easiest way is to go to the KCBS website and read through the upcoming contest section, or you could join KCBS and read about the upcoming events in the Bullsheet (KCBS news paper) or join one of the local Kalyfornya BBQ associations.
Whatever you choose, jump on in and join us...

You can go to I-tunes and buy ($13.99) the first season of BBQ Pit masters for a real good look at behind the scenes! But of course going to an actual live event is always the best!!

Local contest calendar is well covered on the CBBQA site. Be advised that the calendar and wiki section is very skimpy as far as details. You want to look in the forum section where planning is discussed and you can ask questions.

Your sig says Meat Man Dan. Are you affiliated with the ag school at Cal Poly Pomona?

National BBQ News lists contests for all sanctioning bodies, and some unsanctioned.
Their online calendar of events is located here: http://www.barbecuenews.com/calendar/index.asp
