Going to try to build a basket this week. I want it to fit right. It will sit on a raised firegrate on the bottom slats. Or I might try to make it like BigAl's and have tabs on the side.

Also should I make a larger ash pan to fill the extra space on the ends?

Thanks in advance!

i think at least 16 inches long, 14 wide and 6 high should do the trick, or at least thats the size of the one I'm trying to build. I hope this helps.

That's the size i made mine and it works fine.It sets on the charcoal grate with 3in. for ash. If i had it do over i would heat the metal were i want it to bend. It'll do until Al makes somemore.

I just made this and haven't done a long smoke yet,but i did a a pork loin roast Monday.I burned approx. 8lb of Kingsford and some Hickory chunks in the 5hr. cook. The basket will hold at least 20lb.

What is holding the basket up 3 inches from the floor of the firebox?

Appears to be on the factory firegrate turned 90* set on the bottom set of tabs (Tim mod).

Outside to outside edge of my tabs is 15 inches.
Outside to outside edge of the basket front and back solid walls is 14 inches.
Outside to outside end to end is 16.5 inches.
Height is 6 inches.
Tabs are up 1/2 inch from bottom.
Tabs are positioned so that basket can be inserted from the top and then slid to the left onto whatever shelf you want. The right front tab is 1 inch wide and ofset 1 inch to the left to clear the fire box damper door latch.
