First post here, no more lurking.

Getting ready to season my new Bandera. Any tips? I know to coat the inside with oil then heat for a few hours, like cast iron. But I've read heat up to 400* then lower to 220* for the smoke. This will be my project tomorrow. Any recommendations on which oil, and how to apply. I'm thinking peanut oil mopped on.

Thanks, Ty

Here is a snipit from the Klose site. Pretty much sums it up nice.

"Pit Curing

A new BBQ pit should be cured like a new iron skillet. You may chose to rub the inside of the pit with Pam, peanut oil, cooking oils, or even bacon grease left over from bacon cooked on the stove. Then you light the pit with a medium fire, say 220 degrees for those of you with smokers. Choke the smokestack control about 1/2 and let it smoke heavily. A few hours is good, the longer the better. A Pit will cure without oils, but the buildup of the resin base on the doors doesn't seem to hold very well over the years.

I have made maybe 100,000 BBQ pits, noticing the pits seated with oils seem to produce better results. "

slop on a heavy coat of oil.. anything but 10w-30. I used peanut oil. Alternate between high heat and heavy smoke for at leasrt 4 hours.. the longer the better.

Ty,
Have you raised your firegrate off the floor yet?
If not, you need to get it up 3+ inches or you wont even get a good fire for seasoning! No aiflow with the stock location.

Rotate it 90 degress and see if it will set on the bottom racks. Or:
Sit it on 4 firebricks. Or:
Hang 4 peices of heaby wire from the sides down to the rack to hold it up. Coat hanger will work. Or:
Use your imagination
But, trust me, you will not like the fire from the bottom of the the firebox!

All of these are temporary. Search the Forum, pictures, and Bandera 101 (ithink) for more info. Lots of long term fixes.

Have fun!!
Keep asking those questions--we all love to talk

I dindt read all the replys, but agree here

Bucket of peanut oil, paint brush

Inside, and out, apply liberally.

Build a big ass fire. full chimney of kingsford, then add wood. Then add another fulll chimney lit kingsford and more wood.

Hit 400 easy.

then your ready. Good luck
