It took us 20 tries, but we finally won a contest!

Plenty of oddities with heat, electrical problems, gunfire... The organizer certainly had her hands full, but she was always close by when we needed her. She did an outstanding job managing some tough situations. Hopefully she's not out on a ledge this morning.

Congrats to Belly Brothers for the RGC and all the other Brethren that were called and competed. We met quite a few new friends this weekend.

Yeah - HOT MUGGY comp to be sure!!! Tough competition too!! Had fun - but was wore out by the time I got home! Congrats to all who got calls - wife and I were chuckling quite a bit - 6th place overall on 6th wedding anniversary - pretty funny!

Aimee (the organizer) did a FANTASTIC job I think. Our generator quit us (GRRRRR) and she brought us another one - she even offered to cover fuel - but we had the fuel already for our own generator - so were good to go - but pretty impressive she did that AND offered fuel - you don't see that everyday!

Good seeing everyone again! Congrats to Borderwars and Belly Bros - well done!!!!!

Gunfire - There was an altercation at the Fair next to the bbq event between some youths of Columbia. From the news story, believe it was gang related. 9 shots fired, one guy hit, basically in the right a$$ cheek. My friend and I were walking around, almost got ran over by the cop cars flying up, saw 4 guys in cuffs and the guy that got shot. Pretty fubar night for sure.

Thanks,

We did not get to hear 4th place and we got kind of excited for a minute. It was kind of confusing with the baby show going on at the same time.

Congrats to Border Wars Smokers and the Belly Brothers and everyone who got a call. It was nice and hot contest.

+1

It was next to impossible to hear Aimee. She skipped the 4th place call for sure which made the GC call especially exciting.

Congratulations Rob and Chris, I enjoyed meeting you this trip and thanks for taking all the time to visit with me. Good luck with the rest of your contests.

Kudos also to 4 Smokin Butts on 3rd overall and the first place in ribs, and to Gilly's Barnstormin' BBQ on the 2nd place in brisket and 7th overall. Great job guys, especially considering all the challenges and the heat. See you at the next one.

First, this weekend was a weight loss program I don't care to try again...4 1/2 pounds in 36 hours, and that's checking my weight after eating a little over half a pizza! LOL

Congrats to Border War Smokers on the GC! This was one of the toughest fields we've had at this contest, you guys earned this one for sure! I was kidding Gilley's and 4 Butts about coming to MO to take our money, by golly they took home their fair share! Clint, I'm sorry Aimee skipped calling you 4th in the overall, when they called us RGC I knew it had to be between you and BWS. I know the stress level had to be high for both of your teams.

Judging....all I know is hear say....don't know if it was a lack of experience in some of the judges, or some were just out to ruin someone's day....look at the field that cooked this one...you want to fark up someone's day, a couple of 7s would do that, some teams were handed out 4s and 5s...I think that is what Aimee was appologizing for....personally, I think it's time KCBS looks at what the FBA does and rate the judges, and split up the judges by tables by their ratings...more or less assigned seating according to rating so tables are more evenly matched...my .02 worth....

Anyway, great to see all my friends again, and getting to make some new ones....and congrats to all that got calls on a very hot weekend!

Oh, and by the way, my youngest grand daughter won her age division in the baby contest! :clap2: She's up on stage with her Dad in her contest, she hears "Belly Brothers" called from our contest results and she's saying "Pa Pa?" Gotta love the kid, she knows her favorite BBQ team at such a young age! :thumb:

Well, first off I would to congratulate everyone that walked. Good job Gilly and vexter and all brethern that walked.

I judged Saturday but never stayed for the awards so I don't know what the rep or Amie appoligized for. I assume some teams got low scores from what I'm reading. I have judged a lot of contest and very rarely do I ever score any team lower than a 6. If I do you know it wasn't good.

This is the first time I judged this contest but I will tell you I have never heard an organizer tell judges before judging that we should not be giving low scores. I consider myself an experienced judge and score accordingly, no one needs to tell me how to score. So maybe they never got the scores they were wanting, I don't know. That being said, I don't think I had anything that deserved anything lower than a 6. I did did have one pork entry that gave all 9's and another pork that got a 989. Those were two entries that stand out that I judged.

Just wanted to give my two cents.

Congrats to all that walked. It was a hot one for sure.
Respectfully, I was a table captain at this contest and the table that I helped was really very consistent with all 6 CBJ judgeís scores. A lot of 8ís and 9ís were given out with nothing less then a 7, even though I saw a brisket that could hardly be pulled apart. My table did fill out a few comment cards which I hope is helpful info to the teams that received them.
I am not sure that a KCBS rep and a contest organizer should apologize for low scores. Does every entry deserve an 8 or 9? No! Did all the entries at this contest deserve 9ís ---probably not! Was it hotter then Hades? Yes! Did this affect the cookers? I Bet. Were all the judges KCBS certified? Yes!!
I do not pretend to know the answers to all of this. Most that know me know the struggles I have had with judges scores and the consistency that we all want. We can not know how good or how bad an entry is without us also tasting all 6 samples that we present to the judges. Too many things can go wrong or not work out as we think they should. The more I judge and table captain the more I see the judges side of all this. You canít tell me that every entry is a 9 from every team at every contest. It is very tough for the teams as well as the judges to get it right all the time. I was lucky enough to sample some of the BBQ at this contest. Was it the best BBQ I have had? It is not for me to say. I was just a table captain at this one. We will leave it to the judgeís scores. Should we bash the judges or shame them all because we donít think they got it right? Iím just saying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Respectfully changes need to be made. A first time CBJ judge is not going to be as knowledgeable as a CBJ judge that has judged many times. I also feel that in order to have more consistent judging that is fair to all we need changes in the Judging classes. A 3 hour crash course does not make a BBQ judge.
Thurman out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Skip, good reply. You did a good job and I enjoyed judging at your table. I just had to reply since it sounded like we didn't do our job.

I really try to do the best job I can when judging because I do know how hard the teams have it and just one bad score can ruin a good thing.

See ya down the road.

Congrats to Border War Smokers on GC!

I too had a hard time hearing with the baby contest going on at the same time.

Clint you did awesome! I was surprised as anyone when they called our name for RGC and Best in Boone County. I thought you had it for sure.

Very hot contest and alot of great teams congrats to everyone who participated!

When I walked up to awards , I knew we wouldn't get a call because nothing turned out right all weekend. Our food wasnt were it was supose to be for a lot of reasons.
I posted earlier about the appology because i thought it was very strange they did that, not because I thought we had poor judging.. I have never seen that before

Before awards we had heard that a judge was handing out 4s like Halloween candy so we didn't know what to expect. We thought the apology was awkward and I don't think Aimee really needed to do it. After looking at all the scores, it appeared there was one judge, maybe two, that was scoring a lot lower than the rest. Fortunately for us, we must have missed that table. I feel bad for any team that landed there though.

I agree with Kick. If KCBS would rate their Judges like the FBA, the Judging would fall in line. In the FBA if a Judge is consistantly giving out low scores, they are asked to re-take the Judging class or resign from Judging. As for Boone County, there is no reason to hand out 4's like it's a free lunch. I didn't get any of those 4's, but had a Certified Judge stop by afterwards and tell me that he was at the table with those Judges and they were not justified in their scoring. Don't get me wrong! I'm not sour grapes, but I do feel like there needs to be a change in KCBS Judging.

And Ralph, we appreciate you!
Like I said, what I heard was hear say ,like Rob...Jay heard it direct....Skip, Jay and I, along with others, help with the judging classes held here in town....all the meat is prepared by one individual, only the presentations change, with some entries getting some sauce to change it up a bit....I've seen some of these 4's given at class in taste and tenderness at the same table as 8s are given....makes you wanna go.."hmmmmmmm" LOL
