I am working on firebricking the firebox of my bandera. My question is what level for the fire grate have you all found to be the best? I have tried the 2nd and 3rd from the bottom with mixed results. Again I think its more operator error then problems with my bandera. Thanks in advance for helping this Bar-b-q greenhorn from ohio.

I always use the bottom one, but I think I had airflow issues this weekend trying Al's firebasket. But that is a write up for a different post.
I only use those small ceramic briquettes to keep the ash pan up off the floor of the firebox. So with a firebrick, I would venture to guess no higher than second level off the bottom
Just a guess though. Still havent done the firebrick mod.

Chilli,
I use the bottom level on the stock rack holders for the firegrate.
Works fine for me and will be even better when my new firegrate gets back from the welder

Try ~ 4 Buckeyes on each side.
As a Michigan fan living in Ohio, I will say that sounds like a great use for that "Brutus Buckeye" fellow and all his scarlet and gray buddies! Great thinking Brian.

I also use the lowest level of the of the racks to hold my firegrate.
