This is dual sanctioned between BEBA and Mullane Inc (in other words, no).

We are trying to keep the event as economical as possible, so the entry fee is $150.00 and grilling is free to those participating in the BBQ.

I hope that you can all join us.

Oh course not. AND you can try to finish my ultimate brisket sandwich for a future episode on Man vs Food. It's an 18 pound whole smoked brisket topped with a slice of American cheese and sandwiched between two slices of Wonder bread. And you have 2 minutes to finish it. Plus a can of coke. And a small bag of Ruffles.

Hello!

Payment options, team applications, judging applications and general information can be found here:

http://www.bbq-brethren.com/tanger.htm

It's only $150.00 and you get free entry into the grilling with your BBQ registration.

You can register for the grilling, BBQ or judging via this site, but the baked goods contest is being run by the Babylon Breast Care Coalition and information will be available on their site.

The website says the turn in times on Sunday are:
- 12:00 chicken
- 12:45 ribs
- 1:30 pork
- 2:15 brisket

The application says the turn in times on Sunday are:

Just wanted to verify which is correct.

1) Nope. We would like to keep it small as it's a first year event for the host, but they have tons and tons of space. I'd like to have it between 15 and 20, but we can have as many as we would like.

2) Yes, it is directly east of the building that houses Neiman Marcus.

3) Good. Lots of interest since Holtsville.

4) Get your pigs in a row and leave the ducks alone.

Hi,

Some contests charge an entry (such as the Hudson Valley Ribfest), some have a recommended donation (such as the Battle of the BBQ Brethren) and others are free.

A Taste of Tanger is free entry for the public (to clarify, NOT free entry to compete).

There will be live music and we are setting up some demos.

Additionally, there will be a bunch of Brethren there and we would be happy to have you come down and say 'hi'. As long as it's not near turn-in time, people are always friendly and happy to talk about BBQ.

I hope to see you there!

Because there are vendors who will be there selling food, team members are not allowed to sell to the public. If a team has family or friends come down, it is probably ok to feed them.
Most of the team members will be hard at work cooking and preparing on Saturday, then again on Sunday up until 2:30. Once all of the competition meat is turned in to the judges, some of the teams put out their leftovers for the public to taste.

Ya know I hate when we do this to a new and interested Brethren. Look guy if you want to stop by a Brethren site then do it. Don't worry about the time because in the end the Brethren will always welcome you. You may be told to stand in one spot for 5 minutes and even asked to help while you watch and enjoy but.....we won't yell at you to leave us alone or go away we're busy....at least not the good Brethren.

Turn-in times are chaotic at best but they are part of this world...part of BBQ. Telling you not to be there is like telling the groom to skip the service and show up at the reception. Yeah that would be fun but not practical to being part of the event. If you ever see Swamp Pit at a competition I welcome you to stop by at 3 am 4 pm 11:59Am as my chicken box is going together. Thats the fun. Anyone who is rude to a fellow Brethren really doesn't belong here. I think you'll find that too atz.

Hi,

Phil will go through the paypal list and add the teams that I am missing. It seems that a bunch of teams did the paypal deal and didn't mail in the application to go with it. Conversely, someone sent in a check with the application and we aren't even taking checks. Odd.

So, here is a starter for the teams and I will follow up with more as soon as I get it from Phil.

Mas Que Crew
Queer Eye for the BBQ Guy
Smoking Aces
Brothers in Smoke
Blazzing Buttz
Jacked Up BBQ
Pit Posse
Babylon Grillbillies

Prizes Update

Weber and Lapine Inc have agreed to donate the following:

1st Place: 22" WSM
2nd Place: 18" WSM

Grilling Grand Champion
22" Kettle

We appreciate their generosity. These prizes are coming directly from them, not the Brethren or from the prize pool $, so we greatly appreciate their assistance.

I think you'll find that too atz.

agreed.
it's what separates this particular community apart from the rest 100%.
REAL people in REAL places being GOOD friends helping each other no matter what.

and that is certainly a big part of what makes bbq competitions so much fun.

a good read for new brethren is the banner requirements by poobah.

visit my site anytime, there's always 3 seconds to say, "eat that, and look at this", no matter how close to turn in time. then after plenty of time to chat.

now as for people's choice patrons asking me for a paper towel while i'm slicing brisket...:mad2:
but still, gotta be nice, these are the organizers and charity's bread and butter.

So, in addition to the teams, there will be a couple of guest competitors for the grilling event.

Nilka Hendricks of this seasons Hell's Kitchen will be competing. She will be cooking with a member of the public as a fundraiser for the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition.

Chef Tom Schaudel, quite possibly Long Island's best chef, will be doing the same but will also be doing a cooking demo and book signing on Sunday. Tom was the original owner/chef of Panama Hatties, Jedidiah Hawkins Inn, CoolFish and other great Long Island restaurants.

I just spoke with Jerry and Linda. They are on their way.

Will and I were just at the outlets and the stage is already set up.

Remember, there is an ancillary baked goods contest. If you, a loved one or friend would like to enter the 'blue ribbon' bake off, just bring your entry down with you.

If you would like a pdf map of how things will be set up, shoot me an email.

I'm working on another map that will have lot assignments set up.

I look forward to seeing everyone tonight or tomorrow.

As a reminder, Will and I will be down there at about 7:30 am to assign lots and welcome everyone. There will be potluck Saturday night and a breakfast Sunday morning.

We are feeding the volunteers and bands, so if anyone has any extra pit space and wouldn't mind me throwing on a butt or two, please let me know.

Apple Ice is an ice (surprise!) company and they are very close to the outlets. I'll be picking up ice for whoever needs it. They have VERY reasonable prices (I think it was around 8 bucks for 20lbs and 3 bucks for 7 pounds).

Serious question, considering this is a non-KCBS contest and I'm not certified for anything, would anyone object if I let a camera roll on a tripod during judging assuming I don't show individual boxes or any judge commentary? I'd just love to create a quick behind the plastic turn-in table video for folks like me who don't know what happens once you drop off the box.

I completely understand if anyone has an issue but I'm sure I can create some clean, cool video.

motoeric
09-03-2010, 10:47 PM
As an organizer, I don't have a problem with it as long as the teams are unanimous about allowing it. I don't believe that any of the judges will have a problem with anonymity, but I'll check with them as well. If any do, we can focus on a separate table.

Well, the first 'A Taste of Tanger' is now a pleasant memory and the time has come to thank those who have contributed to the events success.

First and possibly most important, I'd like to thank the competitors. This event had the lowest entry fee of any that I can remember. That obviously results in a lower payout. The event was held in not only a busy month for BBQ, but on a holiday weekend. So why did we get such great people to come down and participate? Because of the community we belong to and the cause behind the event.

Regardless of how you placed, I'm truly grateful to everyone that came down to compete.

I'd be remiss if I didn't thank Willie B, one of the organizers. Will's help was invaluable and I appreciate his time, patience and effort.

Phil, as with all the BBQ Brethren events is footing the bill for the cutting board trophies. I'm privileged to work with Phil on these events and as much as he gets out of the events, what he puts in is staggering.

Greg Barry and the Baldwin Butt Burners stepped up to compete very late in the game. They did this for the community and that speaks volumes about both themselves and the Brethren.

I would be remiss if I didn't offer my heartfelt thanks to Jerry and Linda Mullane. It was never in doubt, but they once again showed why they are the gold standard in officiating.

The event was a benefit for the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. Tess, the president of the BBCC and Bev, their event manager, were instrumental in the success of the event.

Santa Frank spent a lot of time in a very hot suit taking photos with anyone who would make a donation to the BBCC. Frank is a good man and I'm glad to have him on board.

The Tanger outlets were fantastic. Their people treated us well, the venue was great and we look forward to working with them again.

I'm getting ready to fall asleep while I'm typing this, so I'll end this by saying that we will strive to make improvements where we fell short and to continue with what we did well.

Thank you again.

Yes, that was an unfortunate mistake on my part. That was the date of the Battle of the BBQ Brethren.

The cutting boards were being ordered and engraved a ways back and my eyes just skimmed over and accepted the date. I was sending out a ton of emails for that event and the date was just stuck in my brain.

I apologize and the fault is mine.

I had a great time getting DQ'd from judging and getting to see TWO Tanger outlet malls in one day. Wouldn't be a real contest if I wasn't running full speed at turnin time with Linda and Jerry jumping out of the way.

Congrats Blazzin Nuts. I saw the good, bad and the ugly of turn-ins today and ya'll are always tops. And to your neighbors, get those ribs in on time and we may have had a different champ. Thanks eric and will for another great LI contest and to phil for cheating so poorly (6th overall).

Video to follow.

And one last thing, why did I have to grill 50 pounds of sausage and peppers for two guys in some AC/DC cover band? I don't think those guys were that hungry. Thankfully Willy gave me a grill and sacrificed two beers for the beer bath...

As a judge... I want to thank Eric and whoever else helped organize the event, for all their hard work. It is always a pleasure to participate when you have Linda and Jerry Mullane officiating. They're great. Most of all, thanks to the Brethren and the teams for some excellent Q. I really enjoyed myself. That's what it's all about.

Congrats to the other mike from jacked up for his 5th place finish. It was his first time ever competing and a 5th place overall wasn't bad.

WoW!!! What a weekend for the Buttz. It feels good to finally walk away with our first GC. We spend many nights reading the board and learning how to fine tune our Que from you fine folks. Thank you!
To our neighbor James YOU ROCK!!! This guy competed solo this weekend and on top of that pulled an all nighter. Farker was my alarm clock and listened for my Guru alarm in the middle of the night. A gentleman and great competitor, I look forward to the next time we compete together.
Mr. Big Barry Poppins - Thanks for pulling through last minute. We really couldn't have done it without you
Congrats to TnT for there RGC and all others that took a walk.

And last but not least Eric Devlin and Willie B for putting together another great LI Competion. See you all at Williepalloza

Congrats to Blazin Butts, NICE JOB. BIG CONGRATS to jim and cathy 51 Burke for there 3rd place finish. There best finish ever. And here is a great story on how to scare phil beyond belief. Phil asked me to take the briskets out of the smoker and wrap them. So i get all the stuff ready in the trailer and i take the briskets out, 2 on one shelf and all he had for this contest. he is working on the outside table with eric vitale(whos new nickname is Shrek) i walk into the trailer and put the briskets down, and this is when the fun begins. I take an empty rack, he is not looking at me, and i drop it on the floor really loud and yell OH SH&t. he turns white, eyes open up like a deer in head lights as he looks at eric and then turns to look at me slowly to see what the damage is. I am standing in the entrance to the trailer rolling on the floor yelling I GOT YOU, dying. Vitale starts crying he is laughing so hard and I think Phils pace maker went off to. I had a blast competing this weekend.

For those who wish to send get well messages, Phil will be at the coronary center for about a week. For those who wish to send condolences to Paul's family, Phil will be killing him as soon as he gets the pacemaker regulated.

Hi,

I have the individual results for A Taste of Tanger.

If you are interested in receiving your individual scores from the judges, shoot me an email (NOT A PM).

Give me a bit of time, as they are in pdf form so I can't cut and paste them.

I'll transcribe them individually which would obviously be a bit slower.

Some scanners have pdf software. I believe I have used it to alter pdf's. Although I have had Adobe pro in a computer I have owned too. So I may be mistaken. I would check it though depending on your printer functions.

Ok, there is one team that I received an email from that I still need to get results for. They will have them tonight.

Everyone else that requested them via email has received them.

Again, do not pm me for results. Please shoot me an email with your team name and I will respond with your category breakdowns.

No Public Posting of the results ? Sounds really offical to me.

Where would you like those results posted.....? Jerry and I ran the contest with BBQ Brethren rules- it was as official as any contest ever was.

Congrats to Blazin on their win and congrats to everyone else who walked!

Sounds like a great time was had, as is usual with Brethren.

Anyone wanna write up something for the BBQ News?
PM me or e-mail (Michelob515 at aol.com) and we'll get it in there.
NEBS is always looking for interesting stuff for our NBBQNews page.

Quite honestly, I'd like to see many, many more BBQ-promoting events 'round these parts, regardless of who does what and why they do it and whether or not it gets "officially" posted.

Maybe next year the organizers and NEBS can get together and get this event (and any others) to be included in the NEBS ToY.
Seems like a Win-Win for everyone, if there's interest.

Happy that everyone had a great time! Hope to see you all soon!

Here on the Brethren, all catagories, just like any other contest recap, thats all. unless I missed it there was no listing of the entire contest results. Thats all, nobody was questioning the "intergrity" of the event.

Folks, scrubbed, please keep it civil. If you can't, take it underground to the PM level or, better yet, yell at each other on the telephone!

Obviously Arlin (and Tim) is correct. I apologize for my part in anything that was less than civil.

If anyone has any questions regarding the issue at hand, feel free to pm or email me. I will not be addressing it in public again.
