Cottonwood

My neighbor just took down a couple of huge cottonwood trees. Have any of you ever used this for smoking meats or fish? I spent a couple of hours splitting up a cord and now I need to decide if it goes in the smoker woodpile or the firepit woodpile.

I hate this answer-- but do a search on "Cottonwood" in the Forum and you will get an ear/eye full.

COTTONWOOD - It is a softer wood than alder and very subtle in flavor. Use it for fuel but use some chunks of other woods (hickory, oak, pecan) for more flavor. Don't use green cottonwood for smoking.

I have three piles. smokin pile, firewood pile and bonfirewood pile.

Cottonwood is the scourge of the earth. It sucks for firewood also. I won't even bother splitting the ****. I leave the logs as big as possible and burn them in bonfires that we have at least once a month.

Did I say that I hate cottonwood? They are dropping their damned leaves already. I hate cottonwood. Not to mention the month and a half where they constantly drop their evil demon seed and it looks like it is snowing. We have so many cottonwoods in the area.
