I used a brick or a chunk of 2 by 6 laid on top of the smoke chamber.

everything else I tried was too damn hot.

6x6 paver for me. Someone here mounted a piece of angle to the firebox with a small piece of wood between the box and angle as an insulator.

Getting ready to order a NU-Temp thermometer, and I know that this may be hard for some to believe, but I do not understand what the question was, or just exactly where the sensor actually goes. I thought it went in the meat being cooked? :? I think I know where some may suggest to put it

They are talking about where to put the transmitter -- it is outside the chamber (duh!) and so the tranmitter needs to be placed somewhere secure.

Markbet, the question is where/how to place the sending unit rather than the probe. What you do with your own probe is your business  Heat/sun isn't the best thing for a unit. Carry on and drink another beer for an transgression you feel that you may have been guilty of. Nevermind, I'll drink it for you.

Thank you (duh), must stem from my recent brain injury.

I wasn't "duh'ing" you -- duh'ing my rather obvious statement! :D

Same issue applies to Pyrex or other non-transmitting units -- you've got to secure the readout somewhere -- and as Jorge says it's best to get them out of the sun -- the LCDs don't like direct sunlight!

Emphasis on secure, I trashed one of my acu-rites by dropping it less than 30" onto the deck. FARK!!!

The Nu-Temp comes with one probe and transmitter, expandable to three. Since most smoke more than one item, is it best to go ahead and get all three. The third one I could use as a moniter for the temp inside the smokebox. How do you guys arange yours, and what do you recommend me to do.

Markbet,

I have the Nu-temp with the three transmitters and probes. I always have one in my smoke chamber and use the other two for meat.

I have produced better Q because of the one in the smoke chamber. I attribute it to the fact that it is much more acurate then the door plug they call a thermomiter.

Can someone tell me the distance (from front to rear) required for a Nu-Temp "shelf"?
"Mounting Mod" in progress for my Taylors, might as well make it work for Nu-Temps while I am at it 8)

Well... the transmitter is about 2 inchs wide and when the leg is out its about 2 inchs deep. So if you want to put 3 out there, i would go with something that stick out off the box by about 4 inchs and runs however long..... maybe 8 inchs to a foot long so you can put some other probs on there too.

I just tosed a 6x6 piece of wood on top of the bandera. The heat does not even come close to the trasmitters.
