Sounds like a great idea! As long as no one attempts to depict how kids are made in food.

And off to the PB I go...

What did you have in mind for this throwdown, Smoke Jumper?

I'm thinking of anything off the cooker that would put a smile onto a child's face and/or wouldn't require high level negotiations to make them eat it. This is all about creativity! I'm simply trying to release your inner child Ron_L. :-P

Think anything shaped like an animal (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=929124&postcount=24), anything with the word booby (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=929735&postcount=48), or dinosaur (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=756732&postcount=1) (I ban Barney though - Teletubbies too), bologna (http://thebbqgrail.com/2010/06/23/childhood-memory-kicked-up-a-notch/), tube steak (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=387371&postcount=1), anything with the words cookie (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1296096&postcount=1)/ cake (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1079989&postcount=37)/ cupcake (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79068&highlight=cupcake), miniature foods (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1269236), giant foods (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1259480), grilled fruit art (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1303360), barbecued kids (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19409&highlight=kid), grilled cheese (http://www.bandera-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=899384&postcount=1), donuts (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1316500), pigs in a blanket (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=86897), out of control monsters (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1194990&postcount=65), bacon mobiles (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1093060&postcount=45), or pizza (http://bandera-brethren.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1327004&postcount=1).

Chris, we can't police this... but it would be super if all brethren ask their kids to vote.. or grandkids.. whatever it takes.

When the vote thread comes up.. ask your kids to vote. Show them the thread and the brethren members should vote for what their kids select.

In THIS forum, we can do this... we all love Q and we all love our kids.

I'd love it if my kids were here...... damn! They've gone up to my Mum and Dad's for 2 weeks..... arghhhhhh.

My girls are my life, don't know what I would do without them, they are my Kids. :becky:

A New Kind of Fatty

Well sort of, I didnít know what else to call it because it looks like a Fatty

I was in Restaurant Depot Sat. and found a fish fillet that I had never seen before. Called King Clip. From Costa Rica I believe. And it was only $3.99 a pound! Exactly what the Kids would love! :clap2:

Iíve had something in mind for a short time, wanted to make them smile, and come back for more. If I remember, this is what Smoke Jumper said he wanted.

So I butterflied the fish and stuffed it with fresh spinach, Andouille sausage, mushrooms and Feta cheese. I then rolled it in Prosciuitto, and put it on the Pro Q at 220. All the good things my kids love to eat. Yes, they love spinach, mushrooms, and green beans. All kids do, don't they?

On a lower rack I added some of the scraps of the fillet along with some Salmon that I wanted to smoke.

This is going to be good!

Lets start here: the fixings.
http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Fixings.jpg

Next the Andouille.
http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Andouille.jpg

Then the stuffing.
http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Stuffing.jpg

Wrapped

http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Wraped.jpg

Finished after four hours on the "Q" with Hickory for flavor.

http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Finish1.jpg

And sliced open, Chris use this shot please.

http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Finish2.jpg

Ready to eat.

http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Plate.jpg

The Kids waiting. They were so anxious they could hardly sit still, hence a slight blur in the photo. Notice the smile.

http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Kids.jpg

Not much left. As you can see by Penny lickin her chops, she clearly wants more. :becky:

http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Kids2.jpg
The salmon came out pretty darn good too.

http://i978.photobucket.com/albums/ae265/chef-jim/Kids%20TD/Salmon.jpg

The girls review.
This was a new fish for us and was very mild in flavor. The andouille and other stuffing came out just right, you could taste all of it. At least we think we could cause it disappeared way too fast.

We love bacon (:clap2:) but this other stuff (proscuitto) was really neat, Just enough salt and almost no grease. Yummy. We think that this was the best dinner we have ever had, and would like some more please. :thumb::thumb::thumb:

They let Sharon and me have some too, and they are right, it was delish. :becky::becky:

For us, the last couple weeks have been for kids, you know. We were visiting friends and learned quite a few cooking techniques. One of the first things we did was make some donuts.
http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_5829.jpg
http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_5830.jpg
http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_5831.jpg
http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_5837.jpg
http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_5835.jpg

Of course I'd never ever consider submitting something fried for a throwdown, so that just wouldn't do at all. We also had some fun activities for the kids:

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_5893.jpg

but that also isn't throwdown-worthy. One of the things we really want to do is to take a sausage tour, sampling sausage in every village we go to. We haven't had the time yet, but we do cook a LOT of sausage.

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6049.jpg

Generally, we cook these while the kids play. The pool heated up to a balmy 65* during our stay. It was only 54* during this cook.

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6047.jpg

A big pot of sausage is nice.

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6050.jpg

but perhaps not so appealing. The kids always eat the little Nurnberg brats, so we picked up all they had -- note these were 20% off too!

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6046.jpg

That should be enough for 4 adults and 4 kids! MMmmmmm, now that's yummy

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6055.jpg

but perhaps not quite right. Let's try that again over coals:

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6065.jpg
http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6073.jpg

Nope, kids like dessert. Our friends always make us some crepes when we visit. This is done outside on cast iron:

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6087.jpg

Yep, crepes are a winner!

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6095.jpg
http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6093.jpg

So we'll stick with this picture, rolled with strawberry jam and dollops of strawberry and cloudberry jam and some homemade whipped cream on top.

http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt211/gvideen/Finland/IMG_6096.jpg

It's not what I originally intended for this category, but it sure was delicious!

Kids like hotdogs, right? I saw someone write that here somewhere, and I know mine do, so tonight I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring again (it's been awhile).

So hotdogs and sausages were on the grill tonight. I made a few extra to be sure and have at least one that was picture-worthy...

http://noexcusesbbq.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/IMG_2478.jpg

The hotdogs were done before the sausages, so off they came and on went some peaches.

http://noexcusesbbq.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/IMG_2480.jpg

We had grilled pineapple (http://noexcusesbbq.com/recipes/grilled-pineapple) for dessert too, but it didn't make it off the grill in time for the plated picture.

http://noexcusesbbq.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/IMG_2485.jpg

The peaches were put on a bed of greens, topped with some crumbled gorgonzola cheese (my son claims it smelled like his sister's dirty gym shoes, but he ate it anyway), and drizzled with honey. They were actually the hit of the meal.

http://noexcusesbbq.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/IMG_2484.jpg

Use this last picture for my entry. Don't forget to let your kids vote, you know they want hotdogs and watermelon, even if there is green stuff on the plate with stinky cheese... :becky:

Gorgonzola in a "Just for Kids" entry? Wow! I'd love some on mine, especially with that lovely pineapple!

My wife found Smokey in a suitcase. I couldn't find Ninja Squirrel for this trip though. We coated some chicken legs with the kids favorite lemon pepper. We made a few with daddy's seasoning for the adults too. The pan and the panko are for the homemade mac n cheese.

The making of the mac n cheese pics were deleted accidentaly. We made white sauce then added cheese and spices, then covered colored rigatoni noodles with the cheese sauce and added panko for the topping. Here is everything on the grill.

The kids know I like to cook and they have come to recognize when I'm cooking for a throwdown. Saturday morning, I was having a cup of coffee with my six year old (me coffee - him chocolate milk) and I explained to him about the 'kid' throwdown and asked him if he wanted to help. He decided he would prepare his special spicy onions (I didn't know he had a specialty). We put it to a vote and the kids elected burgers, watermelon and chips.

The onions were grilled in a foil pack with some EVOO and Jamaica Me Crazy Seasoning Salt (seasoning courtesy of Swamprb via Trade Round 29). 6yo and his special spicy onions:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n228/sipes2/BBQ%20Throwdown%20Pics/DSC_0157.jpg

We took a couple of pounds of ground sirloin and mashed it onto a cookie sheet. It makes it a good thickness for sliders. We cut the burgers in squares cause it seemed like the thing to do. 9yo prepping the burgers:

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n228/sipes2/BBQ%20Throwdown%20Pics/DSC_0176.jpg

My wife and daughter sliced the watermelon. My youngest son just milled around and got in the way. I was the pitmaster. I cooked a bacon weave in order to have some bacon for the burgers. The older boys helped flip the burgers.

Bacon cheeseburger with spicy onions:

The boys plated a burger for me. Bacon, spicy onions, cheese, chips and watermelon. Daddy gets a double (we decided to enter this pic in the throwdown).

We had a lot of fun making and eating this weeks "For Kids" Throwdown dish - Grilled Fruit Funnel Cake Tower on a Bacon Weave. You can view the full thread HERE (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88368)

I made my first bacon weave to go on the bottom.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/posersurfer/Funnel%20Cake/CookingBaconWeave.jpg

I grilled peaches, pineapple, pluots, and apples to top the cakes.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/posersurfer/Funnel%20Cake/IMG_8067.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/posersurfer/Funnel%20Cake/GrilledApples.jpg

Using the grilled fruit I created 3 kinds of fruit sauces and also a carmel sauce for the apples.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/posersurfer/Funnel%20Cake/Sauceson.jpg

I set up to make funnel cakes outside on the deck.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/posersurfer/Funnel%20Cake/Funnelsetup.jpg

I fried both 10" and 5" funnel cakes
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/posersurfer/Funnel%20Cake/MakingFunnelcakes.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/posersurfer/Funnel%20Cake/Funnelcakecomingoffoil.jpg

I made my own personal funnel cake tower with two large and three small funnel cakes. First I started with the bacon weave and topped with a funnel cake done up with pineapple sauce and grilled pineapple.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/posersurfer/Funnel%20Cake/Firstcakeandpineapple.jpg
The second cake was topped with grilled apples and carmel sauce.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/posersurfer/Funnel%20Cake/SecondCakewithapple.jpg

The top 3 mini-cakes were topped with peach sauce, pluot/raspberry sauce, and pineapple sauce along with the corresponding grilled fruits. The final product was ridiculously good. The bacon weave on the bottom was covered with the fruit and carmel sauce goodness. Pretty much the ultimate pig candy weave.

I wish I could say my baby daughter enjoyed this but at 5 months old it would be a pretty horrible way to start her on solid foods. The neighbor kids sure enjoyed it though!
EDIT: I thought I had better put a picture of my daughter up just to prove to the membership that she was happy just to see me eat the whole thing.

This cook session did not go off as planned! Original thread is here (http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88372).

My concept began with the simple premise of a spit bar completely mobbed with giant marshmallows.

http://www.auspitbbq.com/forum%20content/IMG_0127-1.JPG

As it was an instant kid bonanza even before I could get it to the heat, there were some early marshmallow casualties during setup. I will make this next shot my contest entry photo.

http://www.auspitbbq.com/forum%20content/IMG_0129-1.JPG

Those early marshmallow victims ended up getting off easy, as what ensued next was a marshmallow massacre.

http://www.auspitbbq.com/forum%20content/IMG_0133-1.JPG

Whether it was because the marshmallows had been sitting in a hot car and/or because it was over 95 degrees out on this Massachusetts afternoon, once I got the spit over the heat the marshmallows seems to see the writing on the wall and decided to not wait until they turned golden brown before leaping to their death on the coals below. I had an instant full-scale melting marshmallow mutiny on my hands as gobs of white goop rained down.

It was a lucky thing that I was cooking over the Firetrough instead of an open fire this time as the trough caught the melting masses. The early arrivals ended up nobly throwing themselves on the coals, forming a protective carbon/caramel layer which the others then fell upon, forming a marshmallow soup in the trough. We moved quickly to work to salvage what we could as fast as we could, but it was hard to focus through the tears of laughter. The kids were shrieking in delight/horror at the crazy scene. (Do you get bonus points for kiddie entertainment?)
http://www.auspitbbq.com/forum%20content/IMG_0136-1.JPG

It was fortunate that my original plan was to convert this sugar onslaught to Rice Crispy Treats to spread its consumption out post-cooking. We scooped out the white goop and got to work combining it with the other essential ingredients.
http://www.auspitbbq.com/forum%20content/IMG_0175-1.JPG

Ultimately, because of the grilled texture to the marshmallows (prior to melting off) and because of some of the caramel that formed in the trough, I would have to say that these Rice Crispy Treats were probably the best I ever had.

http://www.auspitbbq.com/forum%20content/IMG_0153-1.JPG

That said, I see I have unintentionally clearly created a new entry for www.BBQdisasters.com (http://www.bbqdisasters.com/).

I was wondering when the turtles and the marshmallows were going to come out! Was not expecting funnel cake though. These entries all look great. I'm sure glad I don't have to decide who to vote for.
