Did my first honest BBQ on Saturday. Wow, was it cool! Did up three baby backs, one short, a chicken, and threw some homemade deer sasuage on for the last hour.

Was it good? Damn right! I was nervous at first because my wife invited some friends over. I told her, man, this is my first shot at this, you sure you want to do this? She assured me everything would be fine, "after all the research you did (Thanks to all you on htis site), how could it go wrong?"

Well, our friends just sat there after eating and went, wow, that was good. And they then said when yoiu want to do this again, call us, we'll bring the meat, you cook it up!

The SKD held the heat real well, I found it easier to control the temp with wood, had a tougher time using Kingsford.

Will never use the rub I put on the chicken again, I didn't like it--the others did.

I know there is room for improvement, and what the hell, I guess I'll justr have to keep at it huh (poor me!)>

Thanks to all of you who answered my questions and directed me to other areas for insight and tips!

Congradulations!
Sounds like you had a good cook.
A big part of the joy of all this for me
is having other people enjoy what I do.
Next time will be even better....

What type of wood did you end up using? And what type of rub did you use that you didn't like (home made?) we like to hear about bad experiences as well as the good.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, had a virus on the computer  and it took awhile to get it cleaned up.

I used Elm for the fire, threw in some hickory chips (Need to get chunks instead).

The rub I used was a store bougth rub called "Holiday Blend", it was meant for turkey, but I figured a bird, is a bird, is a bird! Anyway, I think it had too much rosemary or thyme in it.

I use Elmers wood glue to turn my chips into chucks. You can barely even tase the glue!
