Thanks in advance!

Ash and elm are good. Elm is real real strong, ash is very mild, works well on red meats. I would think the bur oak is ok... the Oaks are my favorite, but i never heard of bur oak.. so unless theres something unique about it, i would consider it ok too.

And if ya use and and feel kinda sick after it.. dont use it again.

couple links to wood info. (they may be the same doc.)

The rule of thumb is if the tree bears a fruit or nut then it is more than likely ok to cook with.

Hows that for hedging.

I've heard that about your wood.

What is a canadian red, and what is a bull berry?

Canadian Red Cherry. The cherries can be made into jellies and stuff, but aren't the type you just pluck and eat.

Bull Berry is really a bush. It's kind of smoke-blue-grey in color. It has sharp little spikes, and produces a small translucent red berry.

It's a real pain in the a$$ nusicence. Pretty much grows where nothiing else will. (Huh, kinda sounds like mesquite---maybe just as good :) :?: )

I'll try the Bull Berry and see what happen. Need to go to the in-laws farm to get it---won't be there for awhile. :?:

Sounds like the canadian red may work also.

If you can make jelly out of the fruit, then chances are you can cook with it...

but if u feel sick......... or better yet, cook something for a friend.. if he feels sick, dont use it again

I use mostly Ash with some other wood chunks for flavor(hickory, apple, etc.) Ash has a realy light flavor so it works well with just about anything. I have tried cotton wood and thought it was kind of bitter, don't think I will ever use it again.

When I pull a google search on Canadian Red it list that as a willow not cherry, would be interesting to know what it is Mrkkti has.

how about flowering cherry? a neighbor just took off a branch that was about 12-15 inches in diameter at the bottom and has since been cut into pieces about 10-12 inches long and split. was gonna wait a few months to dry it out a bit and then use it for smoking and fuel.

any problems with it?

SP, when its dry, throw it on top of your firebox and heat it up (heated not burning)

Then give it a sniff. Should tell you

Google is a funny thing! I put in Canadian Red and got nothing but references to the Canadian Red Cross.

Talked to a horticultulist and they are indeed a Canadian Red Cherry. I asked him about using it for Queiing and I got the deer in the headlights look  !
