I found this link on MSN.

http://local.msn.com/special/results/2004_bbq.asp?GT1=4142

Click your city and see if their choices match up with yours. Let us know what you find out.

It's a CitySearch deal. In Austin it wasn't too far out of line. Too much weight given to those places IN Austin proper though. County Line was given way too much credit, IMHO. The last two times I went out there my ribs were beyond well done. Had to switch from beer to tea to get them down and still be able to drive home. Never get me in there again, unless hitting the drive-thru bar at the lake.

Most of mine were accurate.

Had the list been sorted by Rating instead of by miles it would have been a better listing.

Best ratings are in some of the bad parts of town, but that just makes the trip all the better. Alot of them are generations that brought up their low and slow secrets from the south.

There are some bad Q joints here in KC, and a lot of good ones. In the good group the meats are all so close in quality it would be hard to pick one over the other. If I like a place or not usually ends up being based on sauces, sides, service and am I comfortable going there in jeans and a golf shirt (formal dress for me unless a family member has died).

Big name and trendy spots seem to be at the top of the list at citysearch list. Out of 41 listings in KC the last 21 were rated 8.6, I've eaten at 5 of them and all serve very good food.

L.A.'s list is so screwed up that they actually have a Houston's as one of the 10 best BBQ joints. That's like saying McDonald's is a great place for fish.

All Houston's has is a rack of grilled baby backs.

Sad.

And my house wasn't even listed so you know it was wrong!

How can a poll about Q in these United States not include
Memphis,Tennessee and Dallas, Texas???

CitySearch. Their operation in DFW didn't make it. Never really heard why, but that's the reason DFW isn't represented.

They say the best BBQ joint in St. Louis is a KC Masterpiece. I'm thinking not.

Maybe one day we will do our own list. Best "Commercial" BBQ in the city.

Seattle BBQ joints were overall way over rated, maybe the folks doing the rating should be required to eat good BBQ at some point in their lives.

The only smoke ring those folks probably know comes from cigarettes.

Just thought of something. The sad thing about my city is that the best BBQ Restaurant is Houstons which isn't saying much. For good Q I have to leave my city.

WHat about that "Robin's" place in Pasadena? They gave that a 10.

I think the good and bad of this survey is that we all know what it takes to make really good Q. I went to a rib shack recently and the waiter told me the "secret" to their ribs was that they are boiled! Not much of a secret if you ask me but what a low point!! Boiled Ribs?! DAMN!! Most of us cannot go out and just enjoy ribs anymore. There was a time I thought Houston's and Robins was GREAT!! Now they are just okay. Best Q is made at home. Haven't found a great place LA....YET!

The best place in L.A. for ribs?

Smart & Final!

By a cryopac of spares for $1.79 /lb, take them home and smoke them yourself!

We have, "The Best in the West", rib cookoff here in Reno. I usually go down and try some overpriced samples for lunch....then I go home and have some real tasty ribs for dinner. Me thinks that the ribs that go to the judges are somehow diferent than those that are sold for consumption of the public.

Hey BayouBound,

My wife and I were planning on going this year, which I think is pretty soon. We live in the Bay Area so is it worth the drive? I don't want to drive all that way for nothing.

Thanks.

Hey Bayou,
You know BBQ.

Why not enter next year and show them what it SHOULD taste like :o

To clarify, I believe that the ribs that are fed to the judges are somewhat better than the ribs that are fed to the rest of us. They are still really good ribs.

As for me. It's an "invitational". I'm an eater....not a competitor. I'd much rather eat than work.

Reno is a fun trip. It's not "The Biggest Little City in the World" for nuthing. It's a 24 hour party. If you are going, pick the longest line and jump in! Be sure to wash down ribs with plenty of refreshing beverage.

If you are travelling to the area, feel free to PM me for area suggestions. Here's my first: Reserve a room early!

Makes sense to me. Always sent the best to the judges and share the rest. How else are ya gonna win?
