Smoke in the Valley BBQ Competition

< lines deleted >

CBJ Percentage: 100%

Not quite 100%. Probably closer to 83%.
At my table there was one non-CBJ judge who had been pulled in that morning. She had never judged before. I believe that there was one non-CBJ judge per table. I know they were scrambling to pull in volunteer firefighters at the last minute.

This is not a criticism of the organizer, rather a criticism of the approximately 20 registered judges who were no shows.

Yeah, we like the Fatboy a lot, but still learning it. Paul hasn't quite mastered the auto water yet. The recipe was one we switched over to in the middle of last year.

These guys put on an awesome event. I have seen many contests treat teams well but this was the first contest that I have ever been to where they drive around in the morning to each site and offer you coffee!!!! Thats what I call cooker friendly!! Thank you to George and the rest of the WATG? team for letting me hang this weekend.

Did they have a bon fire this year? I have to admit I was dissapointed in it this year. They lit it real slow with flairs. Unlike last year when they doused it with gasoline and it almost knocked me out of my chair. Was a good blaze once again though

I was wondering that same thing Vinnie, if he had a balloon or a jetpack, he was keeping it somewhere other than our site. (besides, he cut our setup right out of the pic)

Great to see you Steve, come and hang anytime.

I actually judged this one, and overall it was an interesting experience....God knows that I would much rather cook it, but, with a full contest, it was worth it to drive up, catch up with some friends, and then sit on the other side of the turn in table.
I can say that at my table I appreciated hearing the comments (after the score cards were turned in) to see that even the "pull in judge" was right in line with the seasoned judges with more than 20 contests...me, 1st contest judging but CBJ....our comments were on, and it showed me that good is good, no matter cbj or not. I tried to utilize the comment cards as much as time permitted, or, if I gave a 6, or lower, I explained my reason in as much detail as possible...and noticed other judges at the table doing the same. Did I bring a ziplock baggie and a cooler....nooooooo....I didnt want to take anything out of that space.....had enough BBQ for a few months.......
Thanks to all who participated, and a special thanks to the Philly special delivery Sled....that was a nice bonus to the weekend....

Great contest guys!~ It was a blast. Congrats to PA Midnight and 3 Eyz. Disappointed in our results though. 1st contest in 5 or 6 tries that we didn't walk. (Didn't even come close!) Too many good teams I guess. See you all at the next one. Anyone going to DC?

...I tried to utilize the comment cards as much as time permitted, or, if I gave a 6, or lower, I explained my reason in as much detail as possible...and noticed other judges at the table doing the same.

Not everyone. We scored 7, 8, and 9s across the board on our ribs but got one 5 in texture from a judge with no comment card. His other scores were high so his weighted score actually counted! Sometimes you are just left scratching your head. Same recipe that scored 4th, 7th, and 9th in our last 3 contests.

didnt say ALL did, just noticed that a lot of comment cards went out from our table....didnt even really watch the other tables....but, overall I was glad to see the judging process working well......that is all I was sayin....
