I'll have lots of pictures and observations, but wanted to give you a taste.

I met Dave Klose today. I think I made a good impression. If you're on twitter you can follow my tweets with the #BGMIM hashtag

So I was sitting outside the cafe at Graceland today, eating the meatloaf recommended by Noskos, when I lady three tables away hollers over at me. Hey I've heard of MOINK Balls.

I was wearing the hat I'm wearing in the picture above. It says MOINK BALL WIZARD. The hat was given to me by my wife on my birthday.

Anyway this lady had seen Jason and Aaron cooking MOINK Balls on the Today show and recognized them when she saw my hate. I told her I created the MOINK Ball and she got all excited. She yelled at her husband. "Hey this guy invented the MOINK Ball"

My wife and I just sat there laughing. I think I've now used up 3.5 minutes of my 15 minutes of fame.

When did you "invent" the Moink??
"Bacon Wrapped Meatballs" have been made for ages. I have an April 1979 "Southern Living" magazine with the recipe. I think that you would be safer claiming that you "named" the recipe. Although the "Southern Living" recipe requires "making" the beef meatballs, hence adding a degree of dificulty to store bought meatballs and store bought bacon.

I will continue to call the ones that I make "Bacon Wrapped Meatballs" and credit the recipe to "Southern Living" magazine. You can call yours what you want but plagurizing recipes is a crime.

You can call yours what you want but plagurizing recipes is a crime.
Would you mind sharing the exact recipe out of this magazine before you accuse someone of breaking a Federal law with plagiarism? Is it the exact same recipe and instructions as Larry's MOINK Balls which he created with his own intellect? Another thing to consider, are you positive that the recipe in the magazine was their own original idea and not a copy of someone else's idea?

This will shed some light on US Copyright Laws in regards to recipes.
http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl122.html

The key paragraph is at the end...

Copyright protects only the particular manner of an author’s expression in literary, artistic, or musical form. Copyright protection does not extend to names, titles, short phrases, ideas, systems, or methods.

So the concept of a "Bacon Wrapped Meatball" is not subject to copyright, and therefore can not be plagiarized in an illegal manner.

I think if you were the owner of the magazine with this so called original recipe, and Larry's MOINK Balls were an identical copy of that recipe as posted in that magazine, then you would have a complaint. However, since you are neither the owner of the original, or MOINK, I'm not sure what dog you have to start up a fight. Unless you're just cranky. I get cranky sometimes, I can understand that.

Sir, if you had read more post by Grail , you would know. Grail never claimed to invent the bacon wrapped meatball , but to his credit he created the term MOINK.

One more thing I feel I have to add. In the 1970's my parents took jalapeno peppers stuffed with cheese and meat, wrapped them in bacon and either roasted them or grilled them. They made these all the time. Back then we just called them "Stuffed Peppers".

I've never felt the need to complain about ABT's. Do you call them ABT's or stuffed peppers? Do you think we should just call them stuffed peppers.

Why don't we start a list enforcing what name every food item must be called. Then we can sticky this list and any time we hear someone call a food item something different, we can point those poor confused souls back to the BBQ Brethren Website to this thread to straighten them out. We will be the ULTIMATE AUTHORITY IN FOOD!!!

BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAHHHHH!!!!

OK, so....

MOINK Ball - Bacon wrapped meatballs that are grilled or smoked.
ABT - Jalapeno stuffed with cheese and/or meat, wrapped in bacon, and grilled or smoked.

Please, can we just let this go and let this thread go back to where it's supposed to be, a thread all about me at Memphis In May.

MOD NOTE: Guys... Let's keep this civil. There is no need to resort to name calling and accusations.

For the record, Larry has never claimed to have invented bacon wrapped meat balls. here is his take on that from the recent article on www.thestar.com published On Mon May 10 2010

“I don’t claim to have invented bacon-wrapped meatballs,” he stresses, “but I applied the name, posted it on The BBQ Brethren and it has just gone nuts in two years.”

That's pretty clear to me.

Okay guys, I got to meet a lot of people that I never thought I would get a chance to meet. And I've got publicly thank Char-Broil for the opportunity. They brought in three guest chefs and I was one of them.

I was able to compete in three different "Pork Smackdowns" between the guest chefs and I won. So I can tell people I "won at Memphis In May"

Today, I was thrilled to have Amy Mills come by the Char-Broil Experience area because she wanted to meet me. How freaking awesome is that? I am so amazingly blessed.

More pictures and stuff will be posted over the next couple of days. Thanks all for your support. I truely don't believe I would have been afforded this opportunity without each and everyone of you and all the things I've learned here.

Quite frankly I think some of you are being very mean to Miss Memphis. She obviously wasn't used to spending the entire day out in the heat and humidity of a BBQ Comp. She didn't need to be there, but came out at the request of Pork Barrel BBQ to help promote them.

I think she was a nice young lady doing her best to enjoy a day that for a lot of people was an uncomfortable weather day. I'm not sure how many of lady friends would enjoy the day in a dress and heels at Memphis in May. She was sunburned and was constantly being asked to have her picture taken with a bunch of smelling and smokey men.

On of the first events I had the pleasure of participating in was the Char-Broil Celebrity Grill-Off. The contest featured several local Memphis radio and television personalities who were paired up with one of Char-Broils guest chefs. The participants were:

Steve Conley, Host of “Conley & Karen” on Classic Hits 94.1 WKQK
Jay Young, Host of “The Young and Elder Show” on Kix 106 WGKX
Earle Augustus, Host of “Love Songs” on Soul Classics 103.5 WRBO
Ernie Freeman, Anchor of Fox 13’s Good Morning Memphis
Joey Sulipeck, Chief Meteorologist at Fox 13 Weather Authority

I was teamed up with Jay Young for the cooking contest. Each team was given about 3 pounds pork loin and two Char-Broil Big Easy Smoker, Roaster & Grill for cook their meat. The idea was to cut a couple of nice chops from the loin and grill those while smoke roasting the rest of the loin.

The first step was to meet and get our pork plans all laid out. Jay came prepared with his own secret seasoning mix and it sure had a “kick” to it.
http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB2.jpg (http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB2.jpg)

Here Jay and I are prepping the pork. I’m getting chops ready while Jay gives the loin a little spritz with his pineapple mixture. Check out the loin stuffed with a Johnsonville Cheddar and Jalapeno Bratwurst. This technique helps to keep the loin from drying out and provides a nice flavor on the inside of the loin.
http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB3.jpg (http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB3.jpg)

One aspect of being a Char-Broil Guest Chef was being able to put aside my deep seeded shyness to do commentary on the various cooking events taking place at the Char-Broil exhibit.
http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB4.jpg (http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB4.jpg)

I also had a chance to combine my “serious look” with my best Vanna White imitation.
http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB5.jpg (http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB5.jpg)

Checking the temperature of the pork loin with my trusty Red Thermapen. Everyone knows that the RED Thermapen is the fastest and most accurate of all Thermapens. In my opinion an instant read thermometer is one of the most important tools an outdoor cooking enthusiast can own.
http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB6.jpg (http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB6.jpg)

Took the pork loin out at 145 degrees and let it rest for 10 minutes. It was perfect. And check out how great it looks with the brat in the middle. You can read more about this technique in a previous post I did on the Internally Self-basting Pork Loin.
http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB7.jpg (http://thebbqgrail.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/CB7.jpg)

And last, and certainly best is the picture of Jay Young, Kyshel Tew and myself with the $250.00 check we won for Special Olympics by winning 2nd Place in the grilling contest.
