Seems we're talking mods lately, and I got a wondering.

Would it be possible to add some sort (doenst need permanent welding) box, to the top of the firebox lid. inside the box is a slightly raised shelf (if there was no shelf the bottom would probably be too hot) where your could fit a cake or pie or something.

I was wondering if an enclosed box on top of the firebox could attain a temp of 350* for baking an apple pie or something.

I rarely open the lid at all during my cooks, prefering to use the side door exclusively.

Even if I had to remove the bake box, its not welded on.

Temps in the smoke chamber are too low (and you want them that way) so I was wondering if it was possible to add something on top of the box.

Just wondering about it, cuz we rarely have pies in the summer cuz it heats up the house to much to have the oven on.

Anyone think this is do-able?

What is a pie ? When your done with it slide it under the firebox for a ash pan. Pilgrim Mod

No, seriously.

Do you think a steel box would get enough heat transfered to it to actually come to 350*.

Maybe. I was at walmart and bought an oven for camping. You just place it over a campstove and away you go. Maybe that would work.

Bill, I have two coleman stove "ovens" one new fold up model and one is older than me. Next time I fire up the BSKD I'll set it up and tell you what happens.

I would recommend setting one up and monitoring the temp as you do you cue cooking. Then you know what you are dealing with and create/adjust your recipe accordingly. Otherwise, I think trying to get both the smokebox and oven temps coordinateed migh be a royal pain.

Bill- A "Dutch Oven" might do the trick for you.
They are normally cast iron, sometimes steel or aluminum.
Normally put directly onto charcoal or over a fire.
Top of firebox may be hot enough.
Try,

Good idea, maybe.
My little brain can only keep up with the basics of smoking, so I will wait to "expand my horizons" :D

Duh. didnt think of that. Look at my "family Photo" that went out at Xmas in the Photo section.

Don't have a dutch Oven, but bought a NB Cast Iron post from Big Straight Al. In the farking picture its sitting on top of the box. In fact, that picture is also posted right here in my office. Staring at the farker and didnt put it together. I'll throw an oven thermometer in there next, and see what temps I get.

Nice heavy lid will make it nearly air tight.

Good one Tim

Bill, I'm late in on this post, but I might add that a small round grill rack with legs, in the bottom of that cast iron pot would keep the pie pan bottom off the direct contact with the cast iron to futher simulate your oven.

Try your dutch oven. I think that would work. Put it on top of the lid with a probe in it next time ya cook. But I think anything than comes in contact with the lid would eventually get to hot inside, so ya may need to use something to create some airspace below it as temps rise.

your Dera must be newer Mook, cuz mine is a year or more old and rust spot from all the heat on top.

Well - where are you going to preheat your wood now? Speaking of pie though - I just had a memory of the blackberry cobbler photo that Heath posted last summer. That farker looked awesome.
