Awesome 6pm CST show.
Bobby Flay, in Kansas City
This Burnt Ends place, and this place where someone with the initials LC (welded into the pit) has been cooking for 30 years or something.
Awesome show.

I think they do the "boil meat, then grill with tomato sauce"
thing there.

Those places are around, but are and exception rather than a rule. Last time I ate Q out my allegedly hickory smoked brisket was good brisket but had never been anywhere near a burning piece of wood. If your gonna call it Q and put it in front of me there better be a smoke ring on it. Oven cooked brisket with a splash of sauce on it just won't do.

I've eaten at L.C.'s several times. It is good, but not great. And they really Q there, not boil. The burnt ends are tasty. They are located in Mo., over by the stadiums. Makes awsome tailgate grub. 8)

Seriously, other than your own, where do you go for good BBQ in your area? If I only had time to go to ONE bbq joint in your area where would I go?

Bigmo, a yellow pages search for barbecue within 50 miles of my house gives 100 listings. Print articles usually quote 70 area q joints but they always leave out the ones in the smaller surrounding towns. I've been to maybe 15 or 20 tops. My personal favorite is Cattleman's in Louisburg KS. The owner operator's son was in my class in school k-12 grade. She started out as a waitress at one place, left when a cook opened his own place, and she left there with the cooks son and they opened their own place. Most q spots have a lineage back to a few common sources here. You can tell by the menus and presentations which ones have common ties. Good big name places here would be Gates, Arthur Bryants, Oklahoma Joe's and Fiorella's Smoke Stack. Small bar & grill places with a competition sized pit and a stack of wood in the parking lot usually have the best meats.

How do they serve Q in your area? Here the 2 main types of Q joints are:
Sandwich Q- This type ranges from real sandwiches on buns to huge piles of thinly sliced meat with a piece of white bread or texas toast top and bottom and fries. Other sides are ala carte.
Platter Q- These joints serve the same sliced meats only on a platter with fries a small thing of slaw a few pickles and a pile of toast on the side. Also refered to as open face Q.
Both places will have ribs (usually spares although I'm seeing more loin backs) and burnt ends. Most places offer beef(brisket), pork, ham, sausage and turkey)
Don't expect to find pulled pork without looking around, most pork here is served sliced. The popularity of the hobby and cooking shows has increased the demand for pulled pork some but mostly you're still gonna find sliced.

I know you would like to hear from everybody on this so I
have a suggestion:
To allow the Illinois guys to jump in, "area" for them only
should not be confined to state boundaries.
Just trying to be kind.

Hecky's or Robinson's is good around here.
Famous Dave's is okay for a chain Q.
Lots of great joints in the older neighborhoods.
Mike, I find it funny that you slant Illinois Q, and yet you got your local grocer to stock Sweet Baby Rays sauce, made right here in Hanover Park.
And did you try the Hecky's yet?
Don't forget that rib your shaking at us up here is coated in our sauce.
Run with that one Brian.

That's the truth here in OK too. Everyone who tries my pulled pork acts as if they've never tried it before because every other restaurant doesn't cook it long enough. Most of our Q joints do lot's of beef ribs and sliced or chopped beef.
Although, lot's of places here do my favorite Q side dishes, twice baked tators & fried okra, can't get enough, mmmmmmhhh. :)

Sorry guys. Didn't mean to bring the godzilla Head Country Avatar. If someone can show me how to re-size that it would be great, tried downloading the pic re-sizer and it didn't work.
Walmart neighborhood market sells these bottles in my area. You've got to try it, definitely the best Head Country sauce.

All of this is interesting. But if you find yourself in a suburb of Raleigh, NC called Durham then you have to go to Bullocks Bar B Q!! Pulled Pork - Hush Puppies?! Doesn't get too much better.

It does, go to Little Pigs in Statesville or C & C's in Mocksville.
