been having trouble locating ANY oak splits in the central kentucky area (or even felled trees for self-harvesting) for my bandera. I'm not a huge fan of hickory or mesquite (just a hair strong for my taste). I've attempted to call cabinet shops calling for scrap oak but to no avail. where do you fellers that live up here get your oak to burn?

EP, welcome aboard Brother. I'm a cabinet builder and the red oak I buy is from KY, AR and TN. Try your yellow pages for saw mills. Also call ads for folks with portable saw mills, they come across all varieties of trees. A lot of the species suitable for woodworking are also quality smoking woods. Hickory/Pecan (interchangable in woodworking) Cherry, Hard Maple, Red Oak etc. Find the smallest cabinet shops you can to call for scrap. Bigger facilities are more likely to have contracts for scrap or a comprhensive way to utilize waste. A small outfit that the owner is still scratching a check to get rid of trash is more likely to have you liberate him from some of it.
Drop by Cattle Call and introduce yourself so you can get a proper welcome. Best of luck on your wood scrounging, a good deal is appreciated around here for sure.

well. i already posted in cattle call. course. that was in november of last year when i first got my bandera. been too damn cold to q here in ky this winter and this was the first day i've been able to yank the thing outta the garage to use it. that plus wal-mart finally got packer briskets back in. I'm still gettin the hang of smoking. the first one i did in november (today is my SECOND attempt) was too dry.

this one i'm doing the half-a$$ way (smoke for 3-4 hrs, finish in oven) cause i just dont have the time to babysit it today.

With all that sour mash made in KY, ain't there no place you could get some old whiskey barrels, or scraps from a place that makes them?

There ya go, Kick. Smoke the meat with oak and bourbon at the same time. Good idea!

No Joke. I have somewhere a bag of Jack Daniels wood chips that I bought. They are from old barrels.
