Hey farkers -
I've been going through some rough times for past few weeks, many of which I created on my own. Marriage seems to be patching surprisingly well after I really farked things up. Been craving for Q for 2 weeks now. Drove to Wal-Mart Supercenter in WV yesterday at the crack of dawn and bought 4 packers in the 9#-11# range for $1.28#. Met a group of folks at the lodge at 11:00 and headed to the Chesapeake Bay for a private Striper fishing charter. Despite the winds and heavy rain, Bud and I endured, catching more fish than anyone on the boat. I landed 5 of 7 stripers in the 5-8# range. Great fun although I could only keep 2 fish.
It's been raining all farking night and morning here in MD. I'm working on the Bud mod right now at Mike's shop. The 'puter here has been down for about 6 weeks, preventing me from being on the board while I'm here. We have a 10# brisket, a 7# butt, 2 corned beef briskets, and brined filets of one of the stripers on. Little rain can't screw anything up. Also talked to BRD this morning as he makes his trip back to TX.Having a great time.
What's up this weekend with you guys?

Well after finally moving the family into the new house, (man the rental property around here is damn expensive...the deposits and first months rent has just killed me!). i Q'ed last night...and it was almost a complete disaster!!! i'd gotten lazy and hadn't used anything to catch or clean the fat drippings of a couple of previous Q's i'd made. well last night, that **** caught fire and reminded me why i have to keep scraping any excess fat off the bottom of the smoke chamber!!! man, i couldn't put the fire out...so i just removed all the ribs and turds, and just let the **** burn off. well it's clean now!! i was able to salvage the ribs...but most of the turds died a terrible death. just glad to be back boys.

Had 2 deliveries to make today and its supposed to rain into tomorrow so I took yesterday off to try a brisket in the Cimmaron. Learned 2 things. Never give a smoker a female name, she turned into a fickle bitch. Briskets get done when they get done. Bought a 9# thinking it wouldn't take very long, as compared to a 13#. Took 16 hrs to get to 194*. Never had pit temp over 235 over until 12 hour mark when rub got crusty. Took it on up to 250 and finished it off. No foil, and pretty good.Tried a couple mods to the rub recipe. Shouldn't have. Rub sux but the brisket was OK, worth all the hovering.
Guess I learned 3 things, fryer is the shiznit for chimney lighting. Log lighter worked good for starting initial charge of fuel too.

I just got back from seeing Shrek with my girl and my son. Guess what? I have just enough time to throw some ribs on that I seasoned last night and have them ready for a late dinner. Gonna throw on some chicken leg quarters and some sausages to keep me busy while the ribs smoke. I came up with a pretty spicy rub this time amd I am actually going to try a water pan this time to see what happens.
I'll let you know what the results are later. Gotta go check my coals.

I did chicken swirls on the gas grill, and threw in a foil packer of hickory chips that I soaked in water for 20 minutes.
Tried something new too.
A Jimmy Dean Sausage log (Italian Sausage flavor) on the grill.
Pretty darn good. Tiny smoke ring from the hickory chips.
Only had the ends. The rest is chopped and into the marinara for tonights dinner.
SPent day doing the paint the back door mod.

well last night, that **** caught fire and reminded me why i have to keep scraping any excess fat off the bottom of the smoke chamber!!!
Good case for the foil lined smoke box mod. Since I started doing this clean up has been much easier.

Sorry to hear your woes TK. I've been in the same boat. Been layed off since 3rd of May because of seasonal slow down. Hauling wood on Friday my radiator split. Feelin down in the dumps. Then I get a call from one of the General Contractors that uses the HVAC company I work for, he found out I wasn't working, talked to one of my bosses and "borrowed" me till the work starts back up. Gave me a payraise over the phone too. I start Monday so now I can afford to go buy meat again. I feel good Q's coming in the near future.

Congrats on the new gig Heath! Hope it turns into something permanent for you. I'll keep you in my prayers.
I smoked some spares yesterday. 7 hours and I still couldn't get them over 160. I finally took them off and put the knife blade on them and it just fell through. Great ribs with absolutely no sauce or glaze. I guess I need a new thermometer!
I also cooked some chicken. I didn't marinate the pieces so they came out really bland. I was kinda upset but then my girl said, "Baby, cut the meat off of the bone, mix it with some BBQ sauce and make sammiches!"
God I love that woman!

Hell, my Honey-Do list never ends, so I've been out in the yard. For such a small yard, there sure is a lotta work! Still waiting on the funds to pick up my Dera from Academy, so I'll be throwing steaks and some chix on the Char Broil tonight...

Did Pizza on the grill last night. Kick ass, no more missing pizza in the summer because I don't want to heat up the house. Put the stone on the gasser, fired it up, got about 500* worked like a champ. Had some cherry chips in the box so it got bit of smoke. Did one with crumbled fatty and one with chicken smoked with pecan. Will be doing the pizza mod again.

Well . . . dindn't go to bed after all. Stayed up all night Q'ing and stargazing. My first all nighter. Cooked a butt, spare ribs and sausages - all came out fine, maybe a little dry on the ribs.
At around 12:30 in he morning Binkie was in the 'zone.' Needle stuck right around 230 and things were good. I had my telescope set up in my front lawn. All my house lights were turned off to preserve my night vision. Wife and kids are sawing logs. Life was good.
I was looking into the constellation of Lyra. The brightest star withing it is Vega. In between the lowest two stars of that constellation there is an asterism known as M57. It is a dying star that has emitted its outer shell into space. No joke - it is commonly known as the "smoke ring" nebula. I say we make this the official deep space object of the brethren! But I digress . . .
As I peered into my scope, I heard what sounded like someone running to my left. It sounded like hi-tops hitting the pavement real fast. I looked in that direction and saw the outline of a young guy (15-19) running while carrying a short step ladder. The dude booked past my lawn and into my neighbors yard. About 10 seconds later, a neighbor of mine's driveway lights come on. Him and his wife come out and I get up to talk to them about what I saw. Cops show up. Turns out they had a peeping tom pay a visit to their 20 year old daughter's bedroom window, while she undressed.
The cops brought a K-9 with them and I showed them where the guy had been. The dog went nuts and off it went looking for the 'gentleman caller'. Meanwhile, one cop came over to my front yard, took a whif and asked me what I was cooking. I introduced him to Binkie and opened the lid. The dude went, "wow, look at all that."
So, after I fed the cops and their poochie "Kodiak", they thanked me and off they went on their pursuit of justice. They have an open invitation to come by for Q during their rounds. Hell, if the peeper woudn't be in so much of a hurry, I might have invited him, too.

Behold the power of Q!! Only with Q can a guy be in the front yard with a telescope when the cops roll up on a peeping tom call and end up shooting the breeze with them instead of going to jail! Being a lawyer probably helped a little too.
All of us here are a bit gregarious or we wouldn't hang out here, but there is something to be said for the periods of solitude in the wee hours when all is quiet except the occasional crackle of the fire, a faint glow coming from the damper openings when as cue puts it, "things are good". After feeding family and friends, those moments are some of the best things about our hobby. Nice story Cue'lio, thanks for sharing.
