Any particular part of Chicago?

In case you're interested in something other than barbecue:

A place that serves Chicago-style hot dogs. Hot Doug's (http://www.hotdougs.com/) is a great place on the north side and Portillo's (http://www.portillos.com/portillos/) is a local chain.

White Castle hamburgers, in case you don't have them in your area.

For pizza, Burt's Place in Morton Grove is an "in" place these days. When I lived in the area 20 years ago Connie's (http://www.conniespizza.com/) was a personal favorite and many people like Gino's East (http://featuredfoods.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/a-store/c-GinoAns_East.shtml?E+scstore+ginos), Giordano's (http://www.giordanos.com/), and Lou Malnati's (http://www.loumalnatis.com/).

I also recommend Hot Doug's and Burt's Place.

For history, you should go to Pizzeria Uno downtown. From there , it becomes a matter of cuisine and budget. A general purpose list for me would include...

Topolobampo, Frontera Grill or Xoco (Rick Bayless' Restaurants)
Al's Beef (Italian beef)
Intelligentsia Coffee (two locations downtown) for coffee
Smoque (north side, if you want BBQ)
Gene and Georgetti (old style Chicago steak house)
Arun's (Thai)
Cafe Ba-Ba-Re-Ba (North side, Tapas)
Spiaggia (Italian)
Manny's Coffee Shop & Deli
Lou Mitchell's (breakfast)

There are lots more. Check out the LTH forum

Gibsons, for sure on rush street......lobster and steak, piano bars and trendy nightclubs. A dress up, muddled old fashioned, Frank Sinatra kind of place.
Italian Beef, order it wet, and don't forget the Giardiniera. It's to Chicago, what Philly cheese steaks are to Philly.
For bbq, Barry Sorkin's place Chicago Smoque.....is a must. I've had the pleasure of meeting Barry at a couple of conferences and he's intent on being the best chicago has to offer.
Chef Luciano's down by McCormick place.......this guy has been hawking chicken since he got off the boat. If you tell him Shelly from Buffalo sent ya and you buy a bottle of wine, he'll sit at the chef's table with you and tell you about how Oprah, Queen Latifah and his celebrity girls all like to come in and drink wine at the very table you're sitting at. He's a trip....anytime we've attended a food show in Chicago, I can count on borrowing anything I forgot from Chef Luciano and his food is outstanding.....Chicken this way, Chicken that way, chicken chicken and more chicken. See if you can't get him into the brethren....he'd be a blast at a competition.

Being a frequent visitor to the Windy City a few years ago. I personally like:

Al's Beef
Portillios
Ginos East

I like how there is a mom and pop shop on almost every corner, they have some of the best food.

That's the oldest one and the one I go to.

You could also replicate the Chicago Italian Beef Food Wars and try Mr. Beef.

I ate a ton of steaks during my last business trip to Chicago.

Here's where I went and my mini-review of each

Why do you think Chicago is always listed as a top city for fat arses? :thumb: That website is just fast food. Foodies here have a field day with all the choices and melting pot of foods that we can eat...

Well check out their website for Luke's beef. That's what I had for lunch today. Not the best, but it is the best we have downtown... Not a lot of beef places in the Loop.

And to correct myself. I had a combo, wet with hot.

We'll trade sausage for beefs at Shannon... To find my girls at that contest. Go over by Trigg or Rod... They dis-own me at that contest...
