Anybody using this Acu.Rite thermometer? Got 2 at Big Lots for $5.99. I hope it's a decent unit.

Not familiar with this brand---BUT
Calibrate those suckers with boiling water and let us know what you find out and think of them!!!!
I am fixing to order a bunch of Taylor thingies at $16.67 each and would love to save some buckoo's.
Inquiring minds want to know!

I've got 2 that are similar, both AcuRite, just don't look quite like yours.
They are the ones that I put through a cut potato and put on the shelves to measure internal compartment temps. I like them because they read to like 392*. I think they are real dependable. Only problem I've had was just this last cook, with the sun beating down on the LCD, it wanted to fog up (turned dark) where you couldn't read it. I had to cover them up, then go lift the cover off to read the temps.
Here's a link in case you ever need to order replacement probes. I set a hot shelf down on the the plastic end that plugs into the unit and melted it, so I had to get a replacement. I called customer service, and they took my order and I had in about 10 days.

I hope to calibrate and test the new AcuRites this weekend.
I'll let ya know how they work. . .
I'm also interested in a remote. The local HD had the Weber remote on sale for $28.95. Anyone have experiance with that model. Or know of less expensive remote models?

This may be a stupid question, but where does the probe go? Does it just go in thru the door and will the door close on that bad boy? Chimney?

Bubba, I don't have one but I'm sure the common set up is to route the cable down the chimney. The probe can either be used to monitor internal meat temps or stuck through a cork or potato and used to monitor pit temps.

Wow, I had no idea that a potato could give me a true pit temp and not food temp. Obviously with meat the physics are different. Interesting.

Probe goes THRU the tater not in it. The bead of the Thermocouple is at the end of the probe.

thanks for the assist.......
I actually run my probe lines out the bottom of the door. If you have done the door gasket mod, this may not be an option for you as it may fit too tight.

These accurites work well and are a steal at that price.
I have a maverick remote probe - it works really well too.
Poulters are well spoken of too, but I don't have any of those.

You guys measure temps? I thought the masters just held their hands over the fire to check the temp. Start at five hundred and subtract a hundred for every second you can keep your hand there.
Hmmm...whatever happened to good old days? Then again, I coulkd just be stupid...

The masters don't the master baiters do, they have callus's.

Ummm...anyway, I went to Big Lots on my lunch hour but not thermometers. Guess I'll just have to keep poking my meat to see if it's done.
Did that come out right?

Kitchen Gadgets. Near, not with, but near the analog therms. Checked all mine in boiling water last night. 2@210 1@209, checked my analogs too. All good and as I was doing this little exercise, I noticed they are all acu-rite too.

well. i've been watching my local big-lots for these.. and they finally got them in today. picked up 4 of them.
here's a stupid question. where the hell do you rest the unit when the probe's down the chimney.. isnt the unit in danger of melting period if you just set it up top? also heat will hurt the lcd screen. i'm just a little concerned. maybe some sorta cork mat or something?
when i do brisket, i almost always put the meat in the next to highest or 3rd shelf from top depending on the thickness of the badboy, so coming up from the bottom isnt an option i would think.

Not stupid at all! I had the same concerns.
Here is where I started, very temporary. I took some metal shelf brackets (the 89 cent cheapie kind) and set them on top of the smoke box. My Taylors have a magnetic back which works wonderful. Brackets stay cool to the touch.
My new smoker box in the shop (being mod'ed to death) has a peice of galv sheet metal the width of the box and about 10" high on top. A little 1 or 1.5 inch lip bent into the bottom will be pop riveted in place and hold 5 or 6 of those suckers clear of the heat and smoke. Sorry, no pics yet.
Just keep them cool and they work fine.

I just run my probe lines out the bottom of the door and set the units on the wooden shelf in front of the firebox, as close to the front edge of the shelf as possible. What you can't see is my Turkey fryer thermo that's clipped to the exhaust stack. It read about 35* under the chamber temp.
The 2 black thermos are Acurite, I use them to measure temps at the shelves. The 2 silver ones are Mavericks, I use them for internal meat temps.

Gotta keep those digitals in the shade too. Sunlight heats up the displays enough to cause all the elements to "light up" and you can't read diddly. See mod in last weeks chuck roast thread. On the brinkmann skd the shelf is metal and folds down, I mag mount mine to the shelf folded down, keeps them angled a bit toward the ground so about anything shades them.

Just set a wood block on top of the smoke chamber next to the chimney and set your readouts on the wood.

My .02 EP,
Get a quality set of Nu Temps.
I probably only lose 1 probe per year.
Now on the $14 Pyrex probes, I go through 2 or 3 per year.
I leave a Nu Temp remote out on the patio year round when its not in the chamber to act as an outdoor thermometer.
Wireless remote is in the kitchen.
Bad thing, you get up at 4:30am for work, go to the fridge to grab a Coke, and you see -3 on the remote. You know you are in for one fark of a commute.
That being said, those Nu Temp puppies are accurate at both ends of the spectrum.

I recently purchased a Nu Temp remote with a temp reading fork in the package, new and unopened on eBay for $9.99. With the $5 for shipping I paid $14.99 total. The retail on these things are what $50 to $60?

Stopped by Big Lots on the way home Friday and picked up two Acu-rite thermometers for $6 each. Smoked a turkey this weekend and put my old Tru-Temp in one breast and an Acu-rite in the other. Set the temps on the thermometers and the sounded "Done" within one minute of each other.
Afterwards I ran all three themometers the an ice bath, boiling water, and another ice bath. The two Acu-rites read 32 in the ice and 212 in the boiling water. I found that my Tru-Temps now reads a couple degrees low.
Even if the Acu-rite thermometer fails, the probes are interchangeable with my Tru-Temp and they cost less than a replacement probe ($10). So all-in-all I think they were a good deal.
