Sounds good OL doesn't like Onion so I'm deprived unless I sneak it in there.

Nice to hear I'm not the only one who deals with this. For mine it's not the flavor its a texture thing so real tiny pieces she can't find or great big ones she can sort out. Pain in the ass Mod. pita mod.

Potatoes (boiled, skinned, cubed)
onion chopped
dill pickle chopped
sweet pickle chopped
celery chopped
pimento
mustard
mayo
paprika
salt
Egg optional
That's the closest I can come since I don't think anyone in the family has ever taken the time to measure anything in that recipe. For a slight change I use some Habanero mustard, or a chipotle mustard now and then. I it sounds like a winner let me know and I'll measure ingredients next time.

Don't forget the last step.
Dig a hole and bury it in the back yard.

My recipe is similar to Jorge's or frognot's. I will also pour in pickle juice when the jar is getting low. Its kind of a "whats in the fridge" thing for me. Celery is fair game. And I use red new potatoes so I do not have to peel them.

Baby Yukon Golds are good for this also.

Used new potatoes as well, and cheat by tossing them in the steamer. Just not for the parents since Mom would have an issue with the new fangled adjustment.

Any way to return to tater salad.
We make it with red potatoes boiled, peeled and cubed, hard boiled eggs chopped into chunks similar in size to the potatoes and some finely chopped celery. Add enough mayonaise to coat the taters and eggies, salt and pepper. I like it fairly dry, just enough mayo to coat things but not turn it into slop.
My kids won't eat anyone but thier Mom's tater salad.

Oops, the wife just told me I missed some things.
Finely chopped onion, pinch of garlic powder and the mayo must be Helman's (Best Foods for you West coasters).
Enjoy!

OK you farkers, you've inspired me. Never made tater salad before, but I have eggs and tater boiling as I post. Using recipes posted here and one in the OL's cookbook as guide lines. First thing that came to mind when I put the spuds in the pan is they should be boiled in Old Bay. Usually only cook red potatoes as accompniment to shrimp, cook the spuds first, fish'em out then cook the shrimp. Just happened to have a spare bag. House smells freaking great.
My grandmother always puts a few fresh or frozen green peas and a bit of diced cheese in her tater salad. Doing both of these only I am using some pepperjack in mine. Let you know how it is tomorrow.

I make a hot German type, OL doesn't eat mayo/mustard variety so I just buy it at the deli. As for the peas, strictly a comfort food thing. Besides I only used about a half cup in a gallon+ of tater salad. Nice color, wish I had some pimento to add a little red.
Thanks Brian, Jorge and Eric you all contributed to my little experiment.

German potato salad? Now there's a recipe I'd like to have if you're willing to share kc!
I second the radishes. Also consider some diced bacon and chives instead of onions. That's pretty much German style.

Anything 'cept my woman and my ride, they're both old and could leave you with a blown rod.
3# red potatoes boiled and sliced 1/4"
8 slices bacon
3/4c sliced green onion
1 1/2 Tbsp sugar
1 Tbsp flour
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 beef bouillon cube
3/4 cup water
1/3 cup cider vinegar
In large skillet or dutch oven with lid (Electric skillet works good) cook bacon til crisp, crumble, set aside. Saute onion a couple minutes til clear. Stir in flour, sugar and pepper to make a thin roux. Add bouillon cube, water and vinegar. Cook over med heat til boiling. Fold in spuds. Cover and simmer very slow for 20 mins. Top with parsley and crumbled bacon. Eat
In the summer we add sliced hot dogs or smoked sausage (ekrich) for a one dish meal. I like it best when I have leftover Old Bay spuds from a shrimp boil. Good Luck.

That ought to get Al's attention!
Ok, back on topic. I must be one of the "wierd" ones of the group as I'm not a big fan of 'tater salad, but let me explain why. There's just someting about having to bite through cold chunks of potatoes that turns me off. Every one of the recipes sound like they would be excellent, even with the added tidbits others have added. But to get me to eat 'tater salad, its got to have the 'taters MASHED. I just can't do them cold chunks of 'taters...........
So I guess that makes it mashed 'tater salad for me.
