I have gotten a lot of info here and it seems that a lot of the rules are up to the organisers. So do you need to win BY before going pro?

I dont think so.. I did my first backyard a few years ago, won GC and took first in chicken, ribs, and 3rd in seafood and i won a good amount of money.. i was told at that time that if i take the money i have to go to the big circuit.. I took the money and would still do backyards if i had one in the area.

absolutely not. As long as you pay your individual entry fees per category you can go pro at any time.

Pay your money, and take your chances! Jump on in to the deep end of the pool! It's a lot of fun.

No. If you are going to compete might as well have the chance at the big money and go with the pro division.

Around here we don't have back yard contest, so there'd never be a real contest
